- - - - - michael tried focusing on the book in front of him, eyebrows knotting over his deep blue eyes, still he had just ended up reading the same sentence over and over again. in his twenty years he'd been to more gymnastic meets for his two sisters then he could count, most of the stamps on his passport were from the many times they'd gone to another country for one of his sisters - normally katie, recklessness got your further then juliet's safer approach to the sport. still the hours before he was expected at the gym to watch one of them were always filled with a nervous stomach, even with safe juliet - or boring, as katie called it - there was always a chance of something going wrong, a hand slipping, twisting too late, all sorts of tings that resulted in a crash landing and possibly broken bones. meet days were the only times he ever turned into a worrier, watching katie compete created such an internal freak out he was surprised he hadn't given himself a heart attack over the years. katie had no self-preservation, she'd try anything once you told her it was dangerous or too advanced, she just didn't take no for an answer it was that lack of fear and recklessness her coach had cultivated in her, something that was important in gymnastics but something even he sometimes wished he hadn't encouraged quite so much every time she brought up another difficult move she'd like to try, it was this attitude that had made her unable to compete today thanks to a sprained wrist though she had insisted she was still fine to compete. this should have assuaged his nerves right? nope, he couldn't feel any relief when his equally as reckless girlfriend - who doubled as katie's hero - was still competing. as much as he hated going to them, he couldn't stay home either, because the whole time he'd still be going nuts and if anything had happened and he wasn't there... he groaned pushing the book away as he rolled over on his back in his bed, maybe once before his life was over he'd not stress about it all, he suddenly realized this was probably what his mom felt before his sisters meets or how she'd felt before his footballs games at the academy.
- - - - - it didn't really matter how he felt, just that he needed to one day figure out how to stop internally stressing so much on those days. stifling a yawn he reached for his phone from his night stand checking the time and his messages and realizing that his reading had served as a decent distraction and if he didn't get up now he was going to be late picking his sister up since the hissy fit she'd thrown about not competing today had earned her a grounding and him duties as chaperone, duties he had not volunteered for nor was he looking forward to completing them. his relationship with katie consisted of being attacked ninja style out of nowhere and her hating him every time he took their parents side over hers or acted anywhere remotely like a big brother should have because she was all independent and could take care of herself. considering the infrequency of which he "butted in" it was pretty uncharitable behavior. still with a sigh the boy rolled off his still unmade bed, tossing his book on the floor next to the pile where his bookshelf would eventually once he'd got around to actually buying one. his apartment, though he'd been in it for about a month, was still pretty sparse, he'd had the essentials really, a bed, kitchen stuff, tv, couches etc. other stuff he was still a little behind on, which didn't matter because most of the time he spent in his apartment only required his bed or couch, by that he meant sleeping, watching tv or having a quick romp with thursday. it was simple laziness that hadn't put his further ahead in making his apartment totally liveable, he didn't have a roommate to worry about so if his living room was scattered with a box or two and the hall closet was a wall of more boxes it didn't matter. sure his mother had been a less then pleased when she'd stopped by earlier on in the week and found him watching a movie with thursday using on of the boxes for a make shift coffee table because he had yet to attempt to figure how to put the fucker together and he'd be damned if he was going to ask for help.
- - - - - he was only disappointed by his lack of progress, but again this was another worry to be shuffled off as he pulled into the driveway of his childhood home and say his sister already bounding out of the house and to his truck while his mother yelled at her out the door, something he hadn't deciphered but katie rolled her eyes to, what did she say? he asked as he waved to his mother before backing out of the driveway, 'keep her safe' she said with a bit of disgust in her tone, like i'm actually going to be able to get out on there, or you'd be able to stop me. this last part amused her and she laughed before she turned sulky and clearly gave michael the "do no talk to me" cold shoulder. he shrugged and turned the music up, smirking a little as she melted enough to hum along and sing under her breath a little as the drive progressed until she caught sight of the gym and she pulled all her angst back up. he was glad he wasn't going to have to be home tonight, she could be too moody. he'd barely parked the car before she was getting out and her gait was haughty as she cradled her bandaged wrist and walked towards the gym, his normal stride having to pick up to catch up with her irritated one. the only upside to this afternoon was that even though he was supposed to be looking after her, she'd go off and sit with the girls she trained with while he'd be up in the bleachers watching, he wouldn't have to deal with the attitude anytime he tried to engage her in conversation. he was sure his mother's irrational fear that she was going to somehow wrestle her way onto the mats today wouldn't like this but katie did have a point, what was he going to do? katie was pretty impossible to physically restrain, which he'd fully grasped last month when she'd literally attacked their cousin kelsey, he wasn't sure if he or kelsey had sustained more damage in it all. holding the door open for her, he easily fell in step behind her though right now he could've easily outstripped her in his haste to see thursday, still he followed lazily behind katie stopping and talking with the people she stopped to greet until she finally made her way over to where most of the girls were standing and he broke away as he saw thursday grinning at her as he waved at the couch he'd known for years now, hey you, he said coming to her side, with a lazy grin.

- - meet days never seemed to affect her the way you’d expect, didn’t really seem to affect her much at all really, even from the very first one, she’d been six at the time and too preoccupied with the ridiculous amount of sequins on her outfit to feel nervous about having to go out and compete with all those people watching, or with just having to go out and compete at all. It just felt like another day to her, another day to go out and kick ass at what she did. Her mother was much the same, and her brother, even dom had settled into the general mood of nonchalance, the only noticeable shift in the rhyder house on days like this was with her step dad. It was adorable really, how he’d get all nervous and worried and excited about it all at the same time, and how, being a grown man, he tried valiantly to cover but failed quite epically with. He was the one who’d encouraged to take it up in the first place, the one who noticed her trying to vault over the couch, and practicing flips on the hallway and suggested to her mom she put all that energy to good use, and yet there were days, like when she ended up at the hospital after a bad fall, where you could tell he regretted it just a little. It didn’t stop him coming along to every meet, with her mom, and sometimes dom, to support her, but mostly just to fret in the stands along with all the other parents. Mostly she didn’t mind it so much, she figured it made up for how little of it she did herself, still, she generally opted for arriving at the gym separately from him and her mom, or sometimes even staying at Michaels place the night before, though, in a way, he really wasn’t all the much better, and he didn’t have just her to worry about, but his two younger sisters, more so Katie, who reminded thursday a lot of herself, with that try anything especially if its dangerous attitude. But really, that was the only way to get anywhere in the sport, fear was the enemy, it wasn’t something that you could allow into your mindset for even a moment. Otherwise instead of just looking at an apparatus, you found yourself imaging all the ways that you could fall off it, all the ways you could potentially fuck yourself up, and there were plenty. Over all, she’d been pretty lucky over the years as far as injuries went, a few broken bones when she was younger, and of course, plenty of sprains and bruises along the way, but she really couldn’t complain, pain was just a part of it, if you weren’t hurting yourself then you were playing it too safe, which was her main grievance with her coach, she was always wanting something harder, something that challenged her, that tested her limits, she was impatient like that, a little wobble on her landing was nothing to her in practice, but it was enough to make him pull a move out last minute that he wasn’t satisfied she was ready for. Perfection was what gymnastics was built on, it didn’t matter if you could do it, it only mattered if you could land it, and land it clean. Of course, that didn’t stop her ignoring him and doing it anyway, luckily her ability to perform under pressure saved her ass time and time again, because it was hard for him to get legitimately angry at her when she’d landed it..
- -that thought brought a smug smile to her face as she pushed to door to the gym open, totally unperturbed by some of the looks thrown in her direction by girls from rival gyms, jealousy and awe mostly, sometimes both. She might have been older than most of them, might not have started out as young as most of them had, but she was just as good, better even, which they no doubt didn’t like very much. Chuckling to herself she walked over to join the girls she trained with, offering a friendly, “hey coach” as she reached out to ruffle the older mans thinning hair, laughing lightly at his pout of protest for ruining his attempts to cover his developing bald patch. Tossing her bag down she took a seat with the other girls as their coach, still grumbling a little over his hair, ran through the pep talk he always gave, his gaze resting pointedly on her as he reiterated to point about keeping to their routines, and she rolled her eyes, instinctively turning to glance at Katie, who shared some of her rebellious antics, before remembering she wasn’t competing today. Though not five minutes later she marched through the door, looking much the same way as tizz herself did when she got benched for a meet, something that, thankfully, didn’t happen all that often. She hung back while the rest of the girls got up to talk to Katie, her gaze on the attractive boy trailing after her, the one that she was technically not supposed to be dating, and the one she really shouldn’t be imaging naked right now. Standing up, she glanced over her shoulder to locate her coach before turning back to mike, “ hey yourself” she responded, smiling back, her gaze flitting briefly to Katie, “ having fun?” she teased, knowing the relationship between them was tenuous at the best of times, and the whole not competing thing would only serve to exacerbate that. Like always, no sooner had she come over to talk and her coach would want her for something, rolling her eyes she offered him apologetic smile, “ duty calls.. ” she muttered a little sourly, smiling innocently at her coach as she walked back over to him, it was inconvenient, this having to pretend, but wasn’t so bad, and they certainly made up for it the rest of the time, it was a good thing his family didn’t seem much concerned with her breaking this particular rule, otherwise they would be screwed, not that her coach didn’t already suspect something, he just didn’t have any way to prove it.
- -she barely noticed it at first, a small niggling pain in her back, which she’d just put down to stiffness from the day before, that would go away once she’d warmed up, it wasn’t unusual for her to have aches and pains, no, it was more unusual for her to not have any. Still, by the time she’d come off her third apparatus it was getting worse not better, but it wasn’t unmanageable, not even close, she’d been in worse pain, a lot worse pain and still competed, it was all a matter of blocking it out, she wasn’t the kind of girl who’d punk out because her back was a little sore. Still, she couldn’t quite cover the way her body flinched a little as she stood up for her next event, something her coach noticed straight away, “what was that?” he asked, grabbing her arm before she could escape, “ nothing. ” she said simply, pulling easily out of his hold, not even daring to look back at the furious look she knew would be on his face right now, instead, pulling a smile across her face and even blowing a kiss to Michael, she’d deal with it after, all that mattered right now was the two bars in front of her. It wasn’t until toward the end that she ran into trouble, the pain in her back, sharper than before, causing her to lose her grip, there was a loud thud as she hit the ground, and second of excruciating pain, worse than anything she'd ever experienced, before everything faded to black.

- - - - - the faking was getting to him, just a little, but how could it not? them hanging out so much had obviously raised questions and every pretty much knew what was going on but the hard to stick to "no pda, period" rule had worked out, there wasn't anything solid anyone had against them. at his house was a different story, for a minute there had been worries about katie, she was the by-the-book kid, the one that tried to focus completely on herself but could spare a moment to bitch out some of her less focused teammates for breaking gym rules. she hadn't said much - at least to him, or to thursday, that he'd been made aware of - and he wasn't sure if it was the fact that it was about mike or the fact that mike was dating her hero and enjoying all the extra non-gym related free time they were able to have. either way, among the washington household it was a well known and accepted fact they were together. their friends knew, because as most of them were teenagers it was impossible to keep a secret among them, and in their moments when there was no way the gym could ever be alerted of the actions they'd taken advantage of being able to disregard the "no pda" rule. it was times like these, even smack dab in the middle of the whole reason they weren't allowed to be dating that that rule got harder to keep a hold of. it was one of the few times he'd ever lament this clingy skimpiness of the leo's she had to run around in. obviously they had their advantages, a perfect - though obstructed - way to appreciate her slender and toned figure, he could let his eyes trail over her easily, and try not to think about all the other guys that were doing the same thing. his smile fell a little at her words, darting his blue eyes to katie for a second he shook his head, oh, of course. it wasn't as bad as normal, mostly because he'd finally learned not to try to engage her in conversation. i almost turned on the heater in the car though because of the breeze coming off of her. he quipped pushing his too long hair from his eyes, she's acting like i personally fucked her wris- he was cut off by a call from her coach, who was giving him a less then appreciative glance, yeah, he knew but again their was no proof him and thursday were anything more then friends. friends who were frequently "eye fucking" as ezekiel had termed it so eloquently one day. kick ass... and be careful. he told her as she took off to her beckoning coach, the nerves getting a little worse as he made his way up to the stands, getting a seat in the second row back alongside her family.
- - - - - it was pretty standard stuff, moves he'd seen a million times or more, one from the team they we're competing against that had made him cringe a little as she clearly just eeked out the move judging from the looks on the judges faces, her wobbly landing and the irritated glance from the coach. it was a display that would've made katie somehow figure out how to incorporate the failed move into her own routine, just to further prove why she was better. his nerves spiked a little each time he watched thursday step up to each apparatus, flawless vault, ridiculously good performance on beam, overall it was a typical day of perfection for his fiery girlfriend. it was going to be one of the days he walked away from feeling like a loser for his worry, like he always did after meet days. he watched even as the few girl katie had become close to over the year and he'd watched grow up with her performed well and made it through their routines without event to help push his worry wart side. he flinched as a little as the girl on the uneven even bars stumbled a little on her landing, which did nothing for the score on her pretty average performance, and he almost felt bad for her for a second, but it was easy to get distracted as his eyes trailed back down to thursday who was up next, he watched katie chatter with another girl before he drew his gaze back to thursday, furrowing his brow at the exchange between her and her coach. she had that defiant edge to her face as she pulled her arm from the aging man's grip, you better not be doing something stupid... he muttered to himself before he pulled a smile over his lips as she turned and blew him a kiss, one that made him chuckle and shake his head until he caught a glance at the coach he'd known most of his life who seemed less then pleased by the action. yeah, that was going to be a lecture from the man afterwards. years of witnessing his speeches to his sisters had made him slightly weary of the mans temper too.
- - - - - it's that beat of silence before everyone has time to react that's the worse, the one that rips your stomach right open, the one before the whispers, shouts and the flurry of activity begins. it was the second he was frozen for when he felt his sister's gaze turn up to him before she and the few girls who were on top of it and their coach pushed off the bench and ran over to thursday, it didn't take him much longer to push his way through the crowd, ignoring the protests of the people who were running to the railing off the stands trying to get a closer look at the girls now surrounding thursday their eyes trailing to the medical team that michael had beat to tiz and the other girls, he felt his sisters grip on his arm as she pulled him into a spot forcing out another girl who looked to shocked to notice. it was always frightening when a girl went down, all the girls always got a little shaky, nervous, piquing the nerves that most repressed and others barely managed to, but they'd grown used to it. what they hadn't grown used to was thursday making a mistake, she was pretty much a god among them. seeing her crumpled on the mats would have shaken even katie, would've made her think twice before she tried a risky move her coach told her not to do and she'd go on doing it anyway, something she was famous for. something Thursday was just as famous for. for the first time in years katie pulled her hand into his and he felt her grip tighten and her nails dig into the skin into the back of his hand as they both watched a little dumfounded at the scene progressing in front of them, stepping back as the medics tried to clear the group around thursday, the coach and the medics continued on using terms everyone there now, more specifics that he'd already learned from years in the emergency room with his father and the almost two years of medical school behind him, but it still sounded all kind of muffled and it bounced off of him and he could feel katie's hand tugging at his trying to break him from the trance and asking why tiz wasn't waking up. he finally tore his gaze from his girlfriend as they discussed how best to lift her from the mats and on to the board, another first in years stunned him as he could see tears glint in katie's eyes and he pulled her into his chest, rubbing her back as he watched them finally pull thursday on to the blue board they'd use to take her to ambulance that was already there or on it's way.
- - - - - several hours later michael was folded into a less then comfortable white hospital chair, with what had been a packed room when he'd fallen asleep about an hour or two ago. the hospital had had a pretty strict three visitors at a time rule but a few exceptions could be made pretty easily once he'd appealed to his father and a handful of the nurses he'd known since he was a baby. he stretched a little, sitting up, and looking over at thursday in the hospital bed, looking much the same, that was, unconscious. his stomach still hadn't settled since he'd seen her fall. he looked around the empty room and for a moment puzzlement leached into him until he vaguely recalled dominic making him briefly wondering if he wanted food. while the young man knew that it was taco night and they were pretty amazing taco's as far as hospital food went he wasn't ready to eat, nothing was going to settle on his stomach. he drew a hand through his hair as returned his gaze back to thrusday, checking his watch and frowning, she should have woken up by now, right? maybe he'd missed it. he heard shuffling behind him and he looked up to see his dad entering the room before he turned back to thursday, "she's going to be fine." his dad's gravelly voice said, and michael felt pressure on his shoulder and a light squeeze, "your mother wants you to come home if you leave tonight." michael just nodded, patting the hand his dad had on his shoulder, before he rested his elbows on his knees letting his head go forward into the his hands and heaving a sigh. this didn't happen to thursday, it just wasn't meant to. sue, he'd tease her about their eventful first legitimate meeting as she'd fallen out of a tree, but that had been minor. this... this was serious. with another sigh he leaned back into his chair, his arm lifting to rest his hand over hers before he stared out the window the rain running down the glass partially obscuring the downtown cityscape which did nothing for his racing mind, but he doubted anything was going to chill him out until she was awake. stifling a yawn, he froze a little as he felt her hand move under his and he looked over to her, her eyebrows pulling in and a small whimper coming from between her full lips. he was too socked for a moment to realize, that yes she was finally waking up. he stood now, reaching over and brushing back her hair, laying a hand gently on her arm, hey babe, he said, it barely coming out above a whisper but not really caring because there was too much relief flooding through him, he smiled down at her, before he leaned forward and kissed her forehead, how are you feeling?

- - unconsciousness was pretty amazing, she decided, as somewhere in between the gym and the hospital she drifted briefly back into consciousness, the pain in her back so intense it took all her willpower to keep from screaming. Sure, it might scare the fuck out of everyone else, but right now, she didn’t really care about that, didn’t have enough room in her mind to worry about it, not with the pain demanding all of her attention, and clouding every other thought, no, right now all she wanted was the go back to that lovely blackness, to stay there. Which was a new thing for her, she wasn’t a wimp by any stretch of the imagination, and she had a fairly high threshold for pain, was used to it, knew how to push past it, to think around it, but this was just… a whole other level. She’d had breaks before, sprains, and thousands of bruises, but this, this was more serious than any of that, which scared her a little, her mind running through all the horrible possibilities. She could hear the paramedics talking, using terms that for the most part, went straight over her head, and for a moment, she’d wished that she’d paid more attention the times that she’d pestered michael while he was studying, asking about whatever it was that he was often muttering quietly to himself about, which really, was more to distract him than it was anything else, he was a lot of the time, annoyingly focused when it came to his studies, which she admired but was often frustrated by, she doubted many other boys could have persisted as long as he did with her in his lap, kissing up his neck and along shoulders while she pushed up his shirt, or whispering dirty things into his ear. Half the time she was sure he did it on purpose, that he enjoyed having the control in the relationship, if only for the ten or twenty minutes it took before he gave in, because he always did, though there were times where she’d had her doubts. She had been doing pretty well on holding it in, until a sudden jolt, the scream so loud, so high pitched she almost looked around for another girl in the ambulance, clenching her teeth together, she felt a needle being pushed into her arm, which she could even feel beside the pain already running up her spine, it wasn’t much after that that she got her wish, and everything faded into black again.
- -she didn’t have to open her eyes to know where she was, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor, and the uncomfortable pinch of needle stuck in her hand were enough to tip her off, not to mention the all too clear memory of the events preceding her ambulance ride which flashed through her mind. The pain in her back was maybe a tenth of what it had been earlier, but she still whimpered a little when she shifted her hip minutely, her eyes flashing open as someone touched her arm, glancing up she was unsurprised to find michael, looking for the most part relieved, though there were still traces of worry in his expression, and she smiled weakly, “ hey.. ” she offered, her own voice only a touch louder than his had been, her eyes dropping closed briefly as he leaned down to kiss her forehead, she didn’t answer his question straight away, instead reaching up and wrapping her hand around the back of his neck, to pull his lips back down to where they were of more use to her, but it wasn’t really the kiss she’d been after, it was too tentative, almost reluctant, he was being careful with her, which was understandable given the situation, but it frustrated her a bit, she didn’t want him to start treating her like she was fragile, though maybe she was just reading too much into it, gazing up at him for a moment she frowned, “ babe, we’ve really got to do something about this … ” she informed him, reaching up to comb her fingers through his hair, which, like always, he’d let grow far too long for her liking, “ even if I have to tie you down and cut it myself… ” she added, a smile pulling across her lips again as she considered that, which he might have been more wary of if he didn’t know her enough to know she’d get distracted long before she even touched a pair of scissors, an unfortunate - or fortunate depending on which way you looked at it - weakness of hers when it came to him, and a lot of the reason that, though he’d been in his apartment for more than a month now, it still looked like he’d just moved in, with med school and all the required reading he had to do there wasn’t all that much space in between, and she was pretty good at monopolizing it. that and, the numerous attempts she had made to help him unpack generally ended up detouring to his bed, or the couch, whichever was closer at the time. Smirking a little at the thought she glanced around, noticing all the empty chairs in the room, “ you guys have a party?” she teased, looking back up at him and raising a brow, a part of her relieved, falling in the middle of a meet and ending up in hospital was embarrassing enough, she wasn’t so keen on an audience, shifting a little she bit on her lip, the pain in her back flaring a little despite whatever meds they had her on, “where is everyone? ” she asked absently, glancing towards the door, though it wasn’t hard to guess, the only thing that would have pried her family away from the room right now was food, not so much evan, he probably would have gone in search of a vending machine within the first ten minutes, but the rest of them, certainly. She figured that was a good sign, she wasn’t dying at least, though with the way mike kept looking at her, she still felt a little uneasy, clearing her throat, she glanced back at mike again, “ so when can I get out of here? I hate hospitals..”

- - - - - considering that he'd seen his sisters through years of gymnastics training one would think that michael would've been a little better prepared to deal with injuries, it was pretty much an off day when a new injury didn't crop up. he's watched his sisters ice this, wrap that, slather their hands in antibiotics to prevent blood poisoning from the chalk that would get into the open wounds left by callouses that had been ripped off. he was pretty sure they spent as much time taking care of their injuries as they did on the mats. he guessed it wasn't that much different from the years he'd spent playing football, but he'd quietly admit that the gymnasts he'd grown up with had it rougher. he'd gotten a fair amount of bruises and he'd dislocated his shoulder one time, a concussion or two. that was pretty much a roster of injuries one girl could get in half a day of training. he'd watched girls dislocate a shoulder, pop it back in with the help of a friend and keep going through the rest of their training time and hardly flinch. pretty much they'd made him and the rest of his high school football team look like a bunch of pussies. he'd sat out a week of practice and two games when his shoulder had been dislocated. he hadn't been entirely happy about it because the bravado in him had wanted to keep going especially since he'd seen a thirteen year old do it no problem. he'd seen thursday nurse plenty of injuries, helped take care of more then one or two of them despite her protests or insistence that she was fine, something he was so used to that when she'd fallen he'd expected her to get up like nothing had happened and finish out her routine, most likely better then she'd started it with a defiant set to her face. it was obviously the part of the sport he least enjoyed, he hated to see those that he cared about in pain or suffering, and he hated to watch them act like they weren't even more. thus far his youngest sister, eva, seemed to have no appeal for the sport, getting bored watching katie and juliet practice. he was hoping that it was a disinterest that would keep up, the unnatural amount of time she spent drawing on anything that she could reach and offered a suitable canvas he was fairly certain she was taking on the safer side of the arts, where her only risks would be the inhalation of paint fumes and carpal tunnel which was obviously a better trade off then laying in a hospital bed with your back broken.
- - - - - it was this time that he was beginning to feel a little silly for worrying so much, not a lot, but a little. though things were always easier when you knew someone was okay, not that he ever should have had any doubts with tiz really. he felt her fingers trail to his neck pulling his face closer to hers, he returned his kiss lightly, resting a hand on her cheek, pulling away much sooner then he normally would have, the whole thursday in a hospital bed was still tripping him out, the last thing he really needed now was her trying to distract him when he was trying to figure out how she was doing. he’d gotten more then average information about how she was doing thanks to the connections growing up in the hospital had bought him as well as her family’s general frankness with him. still all of that didn’t really give the whole picture, a picture you couldn’t piece together until you could get to talk to her, with her lack of consciousness that had obviously been a problem. it’s not like he was going to figure out anything ground breaking from a minute or two of conversation, especially since his brain had just refused to work with him since he’d arrived at the hospital and as he’d pumped his dad for information he’d had to have him explain it to him twice, nto because he couldn’t be lieve this had happened to her and he was making sure he’d heard right but because it seemed any knowledge he’d learned in the many years he’d hung around the hospital plus the stuff he was meant to be learning in school it didn’t seem to make sense applied to her. he almost frowned at the frown that pulled down at her lips, but he stroked her cheek lightly, his eyebrows pulling together for a moment before she spoke and he actually allowed himself a chuckle, catching her hand in his and pulling it to his lips, kissing her palm, you know, i think i kind of like it actually... he quipped, his hair had always seemed to be a problem between them, simply because he could be really lazy when it came to cutting his hair, he hated going to the barber and it’s not like he knew anyone that he could really trust to cut his hair, or anyone that had the talent, so more often then not his hair grew longer then she liked. i'd like to see you try that though, not only was she hindered by the minor detail of her back being broken they also had a pretty bad habit of keeping their hands off each other. which was half the reason is apartment looked pretty much the same as it had the first day all his stuff had been dropped off there.
- - - - - michael let his gaze drift over the army of chairs in the room too, your parents and brothers, my sister... he flinched a little thinking about his sister, it had been refreshing to see her demonstrate some actual emotion but it was also a little hard to deal with, their father had finally had a nurse take her home when her shift had ended, which she'd protested. a lot. cafeteria, it's taco night. he said feeling his smile come easier now that his irrational worry was out of the way. okay, maybe not irrational, she'd broken her back, that was pretty major but their had been edge to it that he could've gone without. at her question he hesitated a little, well, uhm... his brows furrowed, it depends on what the orthopedist and physical therapist decide on. it's not going to be soon though... pushing a hand though the too long bangs he took another moment, babe, your back is broken. it sent a tingle up his spine that was racing a phantom pain, they expected a little paralysis, just for a day or so but it's looked good so far. you'll be able to walk and shit just fine. probably sooner then they'll expect since you're so stubborn. he said letting a smile turn around those words. he was pretty sure that she wouldn't miss how he had glossed over anything after walking with a simple "and shit", because his father as well as the orthopedist that had looked after her had confirmed that gymnastics was no longer an option for her. it wasn't as serious as some breaks, but she wasn't going to be back on the bars ever again. since that was pretty much her career he wasn't exactly being as forthcoming on that front as he could. the fact she'd be able to walk and so far no signs of paralysis had shown up was amazing in and of itself, somehow he doubted tizz would warm up to that outlook quickly.

- - -she rolled her eyes, “ of course you would.. ” she responded, shaking her head, before pulling her hand out of his grip and giving his hair a hard tug, “ but i think I could change your mind..” she added, smiling mischievously, “ don’t tempt me… ” she threatened, grinning lightly. “ katie?” she asked, glancing back at him, a little surprised, “… there goes my god status ” she added, smiling half heartedly, even then she couldn’t help a little bitterness sneaking into her tone, it wasn’t like she hadnt fallen five million times before, but that was only in practice, and usually when she was learning a new move, or when she was doing something she wasn’t supposed to, which was often. But falling in a meet? And doing a move she’d mastered when she was like ten? it was beyond mortifying. She felt her cheeks flush at the thought of going back to the gym, and facing all those smug looks from the girls who’d been waiting for her to finally slip up, the same ones who always did a really pathetic job of hiding how happy they were whenever she had to skip a meet because of an injury. Of course, not all of them were like that, personally she couldn’t see how satisfying it would be, she wanted to win because she was the best, not because someone else couldn’t compete, which was a good part of the reason that she was so good at what she did, her competitiveness, she didn’t see someone beating her as a defeat, but a challenge. Her stomach perked up at mention of food, quickly reminding her that she hadn’t eating for what must be hours, “tacos sounds really good right now… ” she said, returning his smile, glad that seemed to be more relaxed now, compared to when she first woke up, not that that surprised her really, he was really good at fussing unnecessarily over things, namely the injuries she often came back from the gym with, which, with all that med student training, he always made a bigger deal out of than he needed to, and was the really the only person she endured that kind of interference from, because, apart from the occasional massage she’d sweet talk out of her mom, she generally took care of everything herself.
- - -the way he paused made her nervous, a feeling that only intensified when he mentioned a physical therapist, that was definitely not something she wanted to hear, because she wouldn’t need one of those, unless… his next words snapped her quickly out of those thoughts, “ broken? ”she asked, her surprise clear, despite the insane amount of pain she’d been in, which she remembered all too clearly and winced internally just thinking about, somehow she’d still been expecting him to say she’d be able to go home tonight, that they would curl up on his couch together and just forget about today completely, because that was all she wanted right now, for it to be a distant memory. She was too distracted to really hear everything else he said, let alone actually take it in, and after staring vacantly at him for a few moments, she glanced down at her feet, relief flooding through her once she had established that yes, she could still move her toes, she felt the question she really wanted to ask catch throat, she knew what the answer was going to be, she’d seen plenty of girls have to give up the sport with lesser injuries than this, and yet, there was a part of her that still held out a little hope, but then she looked up at michael, and she had her answer, it was written all over his face, “I’m not getting back on those mats again, am I?” she asked softly, her eyes glassy with unshed tears, her gaze locked on his as she processed the gravity of that. turning her face away from him she fiercely pushed back the desire to cry, which disgusted her a bit. really? was she really going to go through all that pain, and then cry now? that would just be beyond stupid, and weak, and everything else she hated to be in front of people, especially mike, which she knew was silly, but it was a hard habit to break, she felt him take her hand and despite her best efforts there were a few stray tears sliding down her face when she turned to look at him again, wrapping her arms around his neck she pulled him down into another kiss, a neediness in it that hadnt been there before. She felt him try and pull away, once again, well before she was ready, but the pain that shot up her back at the movement was enough to make her break the kiss, “ fuck, fuck, fuck..” she muttered under her breath, wincing.

- - - - - i really think i can work it, he quipped with a smirk, the man bangs work so well for zeek, i figure why not? the smirk fell easily off his face as she pulled on his hair and not in the almost sexy way he was used to but in a way that was clearly meant as a 'this is what's going to happen everyday until you take care of that shit' kind of way, a.k.a a way he was not enjoying, ow, he complained, taking her hand and gingerly unlacing it from his hair, i'll get a haircut soon, don't worry. michael nodded when she questioned after his sister, my dad finally made her leave with a nurse not that long ago, she was really worried. he chuckled a little at her words, his little sister had made no secret of the way she admired thursday and it was no exaggeration to say she thought tiz was a god. i'm pretty sure she still thinks you're a god. there wasn't much that could've jeopardized that, tiz was the best he'd ever seen, he even had to admit over katie and juliet, but juliet had been in it for the love of the art not the competition, katie had always had the same mindset as tiz and had idolized her since day one of training. this love had grown exponentially since michael had begun to see her and katie had taken a less "admire from afar" kind of obsession with tiz now that she thought she could talk to her without seeming like a pain. he gave her an apologetic smile before he tapped one of the bags hanging beside her bed, there's your tacos. she might actually be able to get real food tonight, she was doing good from what he could tell and from the basic tone of the doctors who'd been in and out to see her and his fathers reassurances, but it wasn't likely she'd actually get the tacos. i think you'll get real food later, and it's actually not horrible, i promise. spending most of his time in this hospital since he was a kid trailing after his dad's late night rounds and such he'd spent a lot of time chowing down on the food.
- - - - - he barely nodded as she repeated the word 'broken', he could see the span of emotions across her face and through her eyes and all he could do was lightly stroke the back of her hand, he couldn't imagine what it would've been like tables turned. even when he'd played football that was for his parents, if he'd gotten an injury so serious he wasn't able to play anymore it would've hardly phased him, it had just been there way of keeping him from the med school route, which he still couldn't figure out but they were his parents and he learned a long time ago not to question their motives but to just act like they knew what they were doing. his brows pulled in as she just stared at him for a few moments before her gaze pulled away to confirm his story about her ability to walk. then she asked him the question he knew he'd have to answer but really didn't want to. he dropped his gaze from hers for a moment, trying to ignore the tears in her eyes that she knew she'd be ashamed of and he looked back up at her after a moment, no. no, you're not. he told her, feeling a little sick as a tear escaped and she turned her face away from his, there were too many tears from the girls he never expected them from today, unsure of what to do with the delicate state of her back and just not knowing if trying to hold her would make it worse or not he simply took her hand in his. while all he wanted to do was kiss her, act like today hadn't happened and this was all a dram and he'd wake up with her curled into his side on his couch in his half unpacked apartment and they'd try to ignore her folly from earlier in the day, but it wasn't a dream. it was very, very real and as much as he hated it all he could think of her as right now was broken. something he had to treat with more care then they were used to, with more care that he knew she'd absolutely hate. he returned the kiss for a moment before he gently tried to push her away, with lots of resistance from her, resistance he could easily usurp, but would that hurt her? he didn't have to find out when she did it herself, he didn't hesitate to reach for the drip which contained a heavy pain killer which from the faint smell he'd grown used to over the years was morphine and clicked the switch twice, this is your morphine drip, it should manage the pain, but if you need a little extra like if something like that happens again, you hit this switch okay? he said switching easily into that mode he'd have in class, looking at things entirely from a clinical point of view versus the emotional illogical version of himself that just saw his incredibly strong fighter of a girlfriend swathed in hospital sheets and just wanted to worry. it can make your drowsy and the taste in your mouth is gonna suck, but worth it in the long run. it was almost the same spiel he'd heard his dad given countless people over the years. he let a thumb trail across her cheek wiping away a tear, there was so much he'd like to say to her, but he knew there were really no words, there was nothing he could say to make her feel better, he leaned down a pressed a kiss to her forehead, do you want me to get one of the doctors so you can talk to him? he asked after a moment.
