nathalie sat on the edge of her king-sized bed, letting her hand rise and fall into the soft feathery duvet. it left an imprint, every time getting deeper and more prominent. the hallway boards creaked and nathalie jerked her head around to look at the bedroom door, where amelia was sure to materialize in seconds. and sure enough, seconds later she heard a soft knock, knock. "who is it." nathalie asked without asking. amelia didn't bother to answer, only opened the door and poked her head in. "can i come in? please." nathalie shrugged. "sure." amelia seemed surprised, but grateful. she sat at nathalie's desk chair, swiveling around to face nat before taking in a giant breath as if to prepare herself. nathalie held in a bitter smirk. nothing could prepare her sister for this conversation. she knew, because she also knew that if she had been in amelia's position, nothing would prepare her for this conversation, either. amelia began wringing her hands softly, slowly, methodically. it was so like amelia, to approach this methodically, as if it were a medical procedure and she could just check off each step carefully, and somehow it would be fine.
"nat, i..." what a poor start, amelia. have you been practicing that all day? nat, i... nathalie blinked hard twice, three times. "yes, amelia? you what." amelia swallowed. "i'm sorry. it was just...it just happened. i'm sorry. it was just the one time. and it will never, ever happen again. i swear. i swear, nat." already amelia was crying, her voice had broken on the second sorry. nathalie was immune to crying; it just made her angry, so amelia was really doing nat a favor. "amelia, i really don't mind if it happens again. i'm not with ben anymore, so it wouldn't be wrong. the only time it would have been wrong is what you already did, so saying that it won't happen again helps nothing. surely you know that." amelia straightened up and reined in her crying, knowing that it wasn't helping. she hiccupped. "wait, you aren't together anymore? that's crazy, nat. we didn't have sex, we didn't do anything. hardly anything. he loves you!" nathalie exhaled slowly to the tune of banana pancakes, like dr. chelsea had told her to do when the situation at hand was stressing her out too much. "so you're saying that because you didn't have sex, that makes it okay? no, don't answer that. amelia, it doesn't matter. nothing you say matters. if ben wants the cheap imitation of me, he can have it. or you, i should say. you two deserve each other, really." nathalie said all this with no venom or malice in her voice; an onlooker who could only hear her tone would have thought she was saying something pleasant, something sweet.
amelia hiccupped again, wiping her moist eyes desperately so that it was more of a claw than a wipe. "nathalie, please. don't be like this. i'm so sorry. i don't know what i was thinking. i just wanted...i don't know. i'm sorry. don't hate me. can you please forgive me?" nathalie looked at amelia with a blank slate of a face, devoid of warmth or anger or any emotion that could be called human. "i forgive you, amelia." amelia sniffed. there was a pause, perhaps of disbelief. "w-what?" immediately nathalie repeated "i forgive you. i don't hate you." amelia pressed her lips together, her face the epitome of relief and confusion, as if she was unsure of how to take this forgiveness. "but don't expect me to ever trust you again. you've broken my trust beyond repair, amelia. i don't even want to call you my sister after this." and on that note, nathalie stood up and crossed the room, swiftly opening and shutting it behind her so that amelia couldn't see her eyes begin to water and overflow.
