---Michael furrowed his brows, tapping his pen to a mismatched beat, staccato as the literature made sense to him, then slow and broken as he struggled over the complex medical terms and concepts that threatened to melt his brain. he gave a sigh before he pushed back from the library table a moment, scrubbing his face with his hands and shaking his head. he hated school sometimes. he remembered this is exactly why he'd dropped out of high school his senior year. unfortunately the university wouldn't be as lenient as the private school he'd gone to, they wouldn't shuffle his folly under the rug or leisurely take their time processing his withdrawal forms that had given him the time to change his mind and return a few days later citing a stomach flu. that's what happened when your star football player - let's not even mention being third in his senior class or the generous beneficiaries his parents had always been - decided to drop out. exceptions were made. not so much in university. not so much at all. letting his blue eyes trail to the window next to him he watched the rain drops slide down the glass, watching the "race" like he did when he was a kid, a small smile drew his lips but it faded soon as he felt the phone vibrate in his pocket. probably his sister reminding him he'd forgotten her. again. or his other sister asking if she could borrow some of his old notes for this class or that. or his mother for no other reason then to just see how he was. he debated ignoring it, but stood with a sigh and pulled the slim phone from his pocket. a bigger smile drew his lips as leiya's name flashed on the screen, he pulled up the text, welcomed the distraction of spending a good chunk of the afternoon watching tv with her and closed his text book.
it may have not been the most thrilling of ways to waste your day, but it was just about all leiya's nazi of a physical therapist was allowing her to do. not that he was exactly opposed to it, but it didn't always put leiya in the most... generous of moods. she was designed to move, to be active, never to settle. going from rigorous gymnastics training pretty much everyday of your life to being relegated to a hospital bed, a lumpy brace then to your couch and room... he understood the low key insanity it was throwing her into. while it had been amusing at first he couldn't help but admit her grumpy mood was wearing him. it wasn't just the fact she was stuck to her house now, hardly allowed to walk to the bathroom or kitchen unless it was absolutely necessary, it also put her gymnastics dreams not on the back burner but completely out of the kitchen. she put on a brave face, like you could expect anything less of her, but he'd seen the tears she'd shed the day of the accident, ignored the few times he'd seen her red rimmed or slightly bloodshot eyes since, she wasn't to be coddled. the emotion ate at him even more since... well, since he knew - or thought he knew - a way to bring back that dream for her. a dangerous hardly tested way, but a way. he'd had the knowledge tucked in his back pocket for a couple months, vacillating over whether or not to tell her, the discussion with his best friend leaving him in the same spot. they were both of the mind to tell her but they both knew it had to be done in a delicate way.
a very delicate way. dangerous wasn't a word in leiya's vocabulary. she wasn't a take time to consider the options person in any sense, she was eternally in the "get up and go" set of mind. which was good, it was what had driven her career, and, ultimately, ended it. she wouldn't listen to him about risks, or statistics, or the likelihood that it wouldn't even work and she'd just be set back that many more months when it came to being able to live her life semi-normally again. did he feel like a dick keeping it from her? yeah. did every time he see her try to bury the emotions that belonged to any category but strong and resilient did it further compact this? you fucking bet. but he was looking out for her. the surgery wasn't done in america yet for a reason. it was the same internal argument he had with himself since his father's friend had passed him the journal, "i thought you and your girlfriend would be interested in this." he'd told michael with that same smile he'd used on the male since he was a boy trailing his father while he was on rounds. michael drew a hand through his short, messy hair, as he pulled his car to the curb in front of leiya's house, feeling the guilt drape over him like a heavy blanket as he pushed open his door and made a sprint for her front door. he waited only a few seconds before her brother pulled open the door for him, smiling and stepping aside for him. michael patted his shoulder, heading towards the living room, seeing her sitting on the couch channels flipping, snatches of the commercials, television shows and news casts making a clipped and unpleasant song.
michael let a smile draw his lips again before he leaned over the back of the couch, kissing leiya's cheek, "hey beautiful," he said into her ear, placing another kiss on her neck before he stood up and walked around the couch, "you look oddly cheerful," he teased, taking her hand and running his thumb across the olive skin before he sat down next to her, and eyebrow drawing up curiously.

leiya sighed as she glanced at the clock, it had only been two minutes since she’d last glanced at it, but it felt like hours. she could not be anymore bored right now if she tried, and the day wasn’t even half over, rolling onto her stomach she reached for one of the magazines that were piled on her nightstand, flipping through it for a few minutes before tossing it back with the rest. there was only so many times you could flip through them, only so many times you could read the articles, and not just the interesting ones, all the ones she usually skipped over had finally gotten some attention. Shaking her head she pushed the covers back, and swung her legs over the side of the bed, this is what her life had been reduced to, magazines, video games and reruns, all of which were fine in moderation, but day in and day out? it was a little maddening. or a lot. she had never been good at sitting still for any great length of time, being in the hospital had nearly killed her, at least as home she had her few more distractions, like her guitar, or pranking her brothers, but while she had a lot more time to invest into deviousness, the whole not really being allowed to do anything more than walk from her bedroom to the lounge room and the bathroom, or if she was feeling especially adventurous, the kitchen, kind of limited her in terms of execution, kind of limited her in terms of everything. which was something she definitely wasn’t used to.
standing up she walked across to the full length mirror, pushing her singlet up so she could study for the hundredth time the curve from her waist to her hips, which she was sure fuller than it used to be, despite the numerous assurances from everyone that she was being ridiculous. a knock at the door made her jump, and she just had time to pull her top down and turn around before her mom came through carrying a pile of her clothes, glancing her up and down she raised a brow, “are you planning to get dressed any time soon? your appointments at eleven ” she asked, turning towards the closet to put the clothes away, leiya rolled her eyes, “somehow don’t think I’ll be missed
” she responded, “ and i.. ” she began, her voice trailing off at the look she received, “ I don’t want any arguments, leiya ” her mother told her impatiently, leaving the room before she could protest any further. sighing she turned to her closet, pulled on a pair of tights, replaced the singlet with a clean tshirt, and tied her hair up in a loose bun before wandering out to the lounge in search of her ugg boots. Finding them tucked under the couch she pulled them on, “ ready..” she announced loudly, pulling the most genuine looking smile she could manage across her face when her mother appeared briefly from the laundry, “ meet you in the car” she told her, disappearing again, leiya shrugged and headed for the car, trying not roll her eyes when her mother came out five minutes later carrying much more appropriate shoes. to say she wasn’t looking forward to the visit with her physical therapist was an understatement, though considering he spent most of his time telling her what things she could and couldn’t do, and the rest of the time arguing with her about the reasons why she could and couldn’t do them she was sure the feeling was mutual. today wasn’t looking to be any different, she hadnt been in the greatest mood to begin with, and an hour with him sure wasn’t going to do anything towards improving it. he must have been having a shitty day himself because her defiance seemed to irritate him more than usual, and without thinking referenced the surgery that he’d been intentionally trying to keep her from finding out about. she watched regret wash over his face as flicker over hope danced across hers. he tried to quickly change the subject, but leiya had always been stubborn, especially when it came to her gymnastics, she wasn’t about to let the subject go until she got some more information. he was quite unwilling to really tell her much, and she could tell he was doing his best to scare her with all the possible complications, but he should have known her well enough by now to realize that wouldn’t work. besides, further than finding out that, yes, the surgery would make it possible to do gymnastics again, she hadnt really absorbed anything else he had said. “ he finally resort to drugging you?” her mom asked suspiciously, only half joking, when she appeared looking a lot happier than she had going in, “ better ” she responded coyly, pausing by the exit for a moment, before pushing it open and leading the way back to the car. her first stop as she came through the door was her bedroom to get her phone and her blanket before returning to the lounge and settling herself on the couch. sending mike a quick text, she reached for the remote and switched the tv on. She hadnt even heard dominic answer the door, surprise pulling through her as he kissed her cheek, followed quickly by a flicker of lust as his lips then found her neck, she reached for his arm to pull him onto the couch but he was too quick, “ what? Im always cheerful. ” she responded, trying to look offended,“ azz made me some special cookies” she told him, chuckling at the ‘is that a good idea?’ look that he tried to hold back, without much success, “ don’t worry, I haven’t had any … ” she paused, suppressing a smirk, “ today” she added teasingly, laying her legs across his lap she smiled innocently, “ ive just had some good news, that’s all. i promise.” TAG mikey / katie INSPIRATION bulletproof - dawn richard NOTES you'd think after taking all this time i might have managed a half decent post, right?
