there might have been a few advantages to being a philanthropist's daughter, ones she hadn't been able to figure out when it was her father and advantages she still hadn't puzzled out now that her mother had pretty much taken his spot. where she stood in her room right now the loud music of the latest kid they were fostering filtering through the wall into her room as she stared at the white poofy dress laid out on her bed by her mother, she still saw no advantages. she scrunched her nose at the unoffending little dress, there hadn't been a time in her life when she was a "girly girl", maybe when she was a newborn and had no choice but to wear the clothes her parents had stuck her in, but as soon as could figure out how to take her clothes off anytime a dress or something too frilly was put on her she immediately cast it off. which lead to many much abused pairs of overalls and little jeans. as she'd matured she'd become more open to embracing the girly style, but you still didn't find her in a skirt, let alone a dress like this, all that often. the only reason she was faced with it tonight was some sort of charity thing her mother was on a board for. normally brisbane found a way out of going to this - and as she tossed another look at the black accented dress she thought 'and for exactly this reason' - school, previous plans with friends, sudden onset of sickness, etc. tonight no studying, no plans and the couple her mother intended on going with having to back out due to a family emergency, they were also a normal reprieve for brisbane. mark and jillian had been a couple her parents had known since college, a couple she referred to as her aunt and uncle, they'd double dated at least twice a month since college and until her father died. the death of her father had hit them and their daughter almost as hard.
briz tossed another look down at the dress, running a hand through her hair with a sigh before she finally turned to her dresser looking for a pair of tights she could wear with it. once she got those on she shot another distasteful look at the dress, if she slid just right across the hardwood floors of her room she'd be able to hit the wall and at least sprain something, right? she'd be stuck at the hospital while her mom went on to the hotel banquet hall. yeah, that was a brilliant plan. minus the fact it'd push her pain tolerance past it's limits and finally she shrugged off the robe adjusting th strapless bra and then stepping into the dress. trying to reach for the zipper on her own, she growled unable to reach it, after a minute or two more trying to struggle with the zipper, she conceded defeat and held the dress up with one hand and stepped out of her room, knocking on her mom's door, "hey, can i get some help here, real quick?" she questioned, trying to tune out her mothers praises. yeah, yeah she looked pretty, whatever, she felt uncomfortable already. shuffling back to her room she walked towards her mirror, looking herself over. she'd saved changing for last since she wanted to spend as little time as possible in the dress, but all together - minus the heels that would make her appear to be of semi-normal height - she look different, but kind of nice. not nice enough to spend painstaking hours on make-up and straightening her hair like she had this afternoon, but nice enough she didn't feel like it was a total waste. trying on the heels now she was surprised they didn't hurt that much, but she figured the night was still young and before long she'd want to shoot herself.
yawning, brisbane turned to her jewelery box pulling out the earrings she wanted she started to put them on as she walked a circle in her room trying to get used to the feel of the heels, she didn't wear them that often. even prom she'd ditched her shoes before they'd barely made it into the hall, the same hall she'd be in tonight. she barely heard the doorbell ring over her temporary sister's music, "i'll get it," she informed the house pointlessly, her mother was still finishing up her make-up and kayla wasn't going to get up and get it herself. she was one of those kids not looking to be adopted but one that also wasn't a total asshole, she kept to herself apart from meals and that was really a welcome change to brisbane. brisbane stared at the stairs for a moment, really wishing she'd thought to take the heels off as she tried to hurry down them but still be safe, and finding herself a little irritated at the person behind the door. they weren't expecting anyone, unless it was mark or jillian who'd come to last minute save brisbane from going. "i'm coming, sorry!" she yelled as she heard the doorbell again half way from the stairs to her front door. pulling the door open she was drew up a little short to see blaine there, not that she didn't mind seeing him, she enjoyed his company. well, more then. honestly, she'd harbored a crush on him for a long time, one that she didn't think was all that serious and had lost a little steam when she'd learned he'd dated the human barbie, the long-legged beautiful model of a friend they shared. brisbane never stood a chance against kaileah, when leah walked into a room it was instant hit on every other girl's self-esteem.
then it hit her, "movies!" they'd had plans, which wasn't unusual, but her forgetting them, that was unusual, "oh my god, i totally forgot. clearly." brisbane shook her head, "my mom has this charity thing, i think it's for the hospital or starving african orphans in china or something... a-and the people she was going with had to cancel tonight because their daughter is sick and she told me i had to come with her and i completely spaced this..." she stopped her explanation there, kind of finally realizing how she looked, how different she would've looked. sure, he'd seen her pictures from prom but she hadn't gone to this much trouble for prom where she'd sported her hair slicked back into a curled ponytail and a silk maxi dress that looked like it belonged at the beach not at a formal dance. she felt a blush come to her cheeks under his gaze, when they hung out here she spent most of the time in her pajama's, and when she went o his house she didn't really put a ton of effort their either, jeans and t shirt - or as her and briar had been obsessive over lately, large flannel shirts, that hid her figure not put it on display like right now. as weird as being all dolled up in front of him was she didn't want to miss out on hanging out with him, they had a few uni classes together but generally university had eaten up a lot of the time they could have used to hang out, plus maybe the night would be a little more bearable with a friend, she looked over his clothes and figured with one of her dad's jackets he'd look like he was just going for a more casual look, "so," she began with a smile turning up the corners of her mouth, "we do have an extra ticket, and it'd be a shame if it went to waste and, you know, it's not like you had any other plans..." she said, her smile turning hopeful as her bottom lip pulled beneath her teeth.

he’d actually really been looking forward to tonight, more than usual, though he couldn’t really pinpoint why. They weren’t doing anything special, just going to the movies, not his favorite thing to do, mostly because of his inability to sit still throughout an entire movie, resulting in a lot of wasted popcorn, or sometimes he would test out his ninja skills on the poor unsuspecting public, something which thankfully brizzy found amusing more than annoying or embarrassing. And yet, here he was grinning like an idiot at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. This was ridiculous, he really needed to stop right now before briar caught him and read something into it that she shouldn’t. she was already half convinced there was something going on there that he wasn’t being forthcoming about, that he liked Brisbane as more than just a friend, something that he had initially dismissed, because well.. it was brizzy. they were friends, end of story. If only it was as simple as that, he shook his head, it was silly to even think about, its not like she’d be interested in him, and … he caught himself there, brooding over things had always been a talent of his, he needed a distraction, but first.. he should probably finish getting dressed. Pushing the bathroom door open, he walked back down the hallway towards his room, pulling a pair of jeans and a tshirt out of the chaos that used to be a neatly folded pile he threw them on, before running the towel through his still wet hair. Throwing himself down on his bed, he winced, as the corner of the books he’d left on the bed this morning caught him in the ribs, rolling off it he lay on his back, staring absently up at the ceiling before a loud noise coming from the hallway made him jump, followed by a disgruntled yell, jumping up he went to investigate, only to find his dad getting to his feet, “what did I say about tracking water through the house?” his dad scolded, it took all his willpower not to laugh, and he succeeded until briar appeared from her room and promptly started laughing, at which point blaine had no choice but to join in, briar turned to him after a moment, taking in the damp hair and fresh clothes, “big date tonight?” she taunted, smirking, he felt his face heat a little, but instead of responding he made his way towards the stairs and down to the living room, a quick glance at the clock assured him he still had plenty of time before he was meant to go over to brizzy’s place, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing, flicking on the tv he flipped absently through the channels, before picking up the controller by his feet and turning his xbox on. He was in the middle of a intense game of gta when briar appeared, “aren’t you going to be late?” she asked loudly, making him jump, he glanced at the clock, she was right, if he didn’t move, he would be late.
the sight that greeted him when she opened the door was unexpected, but certainly not unwelcome. And yet, a part of him really just wanted to look away, because he knew that this, right here was definitely going to change things. Its not like he had been completely oblivious to the way she looked, he wasn’t blind, brisbane was beautiful, anyone could see that, even though she never went to any great length to try and show that off, like a lot of girls, it was undeniable. Still, he himself had never really looked at her in that way, though in some ways that was intentional, because the thing he liked most about hanging out with briz? it was never uncomfortable. Which was kind of a big deal, because aside from briar, he didn’t really have that with any other girls, even kaileah, because… yeah, they were pretty close, it was kind of unavoidable when she was best friends with his twin, but there was enough history there to take things into that awkward area from time to time, not a lot, but enough. You’d think with influences like ezekiel in his life he might have picked up a few things, that maybe some of that confidence might have rubbed off on him, but no, in eighteen years he’d managed to remain as dorky and awkward as ever, though those qualities must have had some sort of charm right? he had dated leah hadn’t after all, and it certainly hadn’t been because of dashing good looks, he’d been nothing more than a scrawny kid back then, not that he had filled out much since then, it was a little pathetic really, but he wasn’t too worried about it, at least, not enough to do anything about it, he grinned, managing to recollect himself fairly quickly considering, brisbane, in a dress, it was not something that happened very often, “…come on briz, if you’ve got a hot date you can tell me, theres no need to lie about it” he joked, trying not to stare, it was hard though, she looked amazing, “well actually…” he began, a smile pulling across his lips, “I did, but I blew them off just for you, and this is the thanks I get?” he teased, shaking his head, not about to add that they had only been plans forced on him by his twin to watch some movie she felt it necessary he see, and plans he was more than happy to get out of, “do I have time to change?” he asked, glancing down at the dress again for a moment, “I feel totally under dressed next to you..”

briz shook her head at his words, a slight blush dusting her cheeks, "well," she began with a smirk, "ben and jerry both asked me out tonight but i hadn't quite decided yet. but now i don't have to choose." she looked up at him her smirk softening into a normal smile. "well actually..." brisbane's eyebrows raised, an expectant smile, before she pulled a frown on, playing along, "i know, i'm just a horrible friend, aren't i?" this could have been the beginning to awkward evening, for her it already was simply because she had to be dressed up like this, as much as her mom would've liked brisbane would never get used to it, she loved her jeans and the occasional skirt was alright, being this fancy in front of him was just weird but the great thing about them, there really wasn't a situation they couldn't joke themselves out of. sarcasm was there standby and a handy one at that. “do I have time to change?” a smile lit her features, and she gave him a hug, an easier feat with the heels that made her semi-average height, "you're a rockstar, swear to god." she said as she pulled back, she considered his question biting her lip, "uhm," she turned and looked up the stairs, "not... not really? i don't know?" she drew a hand through her hair heedless of messing it up, "i have one of my dad's old jackets, in the hall closet, and if you put it on over, it really wouldn't look that bad. we'll call you a hipster." she said with a chuckle, before a devilish smile pulled over her lips, "or, we did have this scrawny little twelve year old stay with us a few months back, my mom got him a jacket, i'm sure you'd fit it fine." she teased, stepping back so he could come into the house and closed the door before she walked down the hall got her dad's old jacket. she held the jacket out to him then, "it should do for the night." she said with a shrug, "besides i look so fly no one will pay attention to you anyways." she told him with a chuckle turning as she heard her mothers heels on the stairs, and a bright smile spread over her mom's face, the clutch brisbane had left on her bed in her mothers hands, "oh blaine, i didn't expect you to come by tonight," she saw her mom's eyes trail over the jacket, "and you didn't expect this either, i think." brisbane looked down with a chuckle, shaking her head and avoiding her mom's gaze, apart from thursday, she was the only one that knew brisbane liked blaine in a more then friends way, even though she'd tried to deny it all the time. "we have the extra ticket, so..." her mom shrugged, "whatever, it's all good. just behave." it was briz's turn to shrug, "you say that like it's going to be a problem."
even if she did have blaine as some sort of security blanket tonight, it was still going to drag on. it may not have been one of the duller ones she'd been forced to go to but it was still essentially a lot of standing around and pretending to care about what the other person said. it was about the only time she ever drank too, they waiters didn't pay a whole lot of attention to who took a glass of champagne from their tray and most of the time you didn't have many young people around to worry about carding. it's not like the champagne really did much but after a few glasses you were happy enough you didn't feel like shooting yourself. her mom parted ways with them soon after they got their table number, "it seems to me if they took all the money they wasted on these stupid things and put it towards whatever cause they were supporting, it'd be a lot better off." she said, looping her arm through his as stumbled a little in her heels, "i might just be as clumsy as you or briar tonight, this could be a problem." her father had managed to get two or three years of ballet out of her, which had pretty much cured whatever clumsiness she had picked up from him, but it didn't do much for her in heels, the only way she'd solve that problem was with practice, which hardly seemed worth it for the time she spent in them. it'd be months before she was forced into those death-traps again. she looked around the room and while she saw her mom already smiling and laughing at what was no doubt a lame joke, and she realized that some of the people looked vaguley familiar but without her mom they'd not bother her, so it didn't bother too much she couldn't remember any of their names, it saved her the awkward attempts at conversation and worrying about saying something wrong. with blaine by her side she also didn't really have to worry bout being approached, most people would see them together and leave them to whatever business they had, that is if they didn't realize their age and dismiss them first. something she was used to as well, she was always shuffled to the back when she'd gone with her parents, her father had tried to include her, but she was more then content in letting the people ignore her. she turned to look up at blaine now, "do we gorge ourselves on mini-quiches or make fun of people first? it's quite a dilemma since both are so readily available to exploit." her eyes dropped from his face first, spotting a woman in a dress hemmed in a thick block of feathers, leaving a trail of pink feathers behind her, "exhibit a." she said in a hushed tone, scrunching her nose before she gave a soft laugh. "no wedding ring, a cougar, definitely on the prowl, i'm sure she'd love you." she teased an impish glint in her eye, before she unlooped her arm from his and snagged two glasses fom a passing waiter, offering one to him before taking a sip of hers, scrunching her nose in distaste this time, the first glass always tasted awful to her, but after a few glasses she got used to it, mostly because a light barely there buzz kicked in that didn't make things seem as dull.
