"at least it's not raining.." tierney mumbled to herself, raising her gaze towards the sky over head. a single cloud trickling by temporarily blocked the suns rays. "yet." she had to work at holding back a groan. she could feel it building in her throat. the breckenridge residence was only a few blocks away from her own humble abode, so walking didn't seem like it would be too much to handle. unfortunately, her legs were disagreeing with her optimistic attitude, and practically screaming with pain. just a cramp. putting her journey on hold for a moment, the brunette lowered herself onto the curb to stretch out her aching calves. massaging the sore muscles with her finger tips, tierney exhaled, processing her thoughts as she peered up at the darkening sky. as usual, she was talking herself out of being spontaneous. she often degraded her choices, even when the most logical thing would be to advance forward. she twisted around, looking at the path she had just made. she had gone too far to give up now. it was a shorter walk to raine's, then retracing her steps back home.
of course, there was the small chance that raine wouldn't be present once she actually reached the household, but, knowing her best friend, she was probably just torturing her siblings with another romance film, or something along those lines. that, or just torturing them in general. tierney liked to assume her friend was just as equally lifeless as she was, with nothing really to do outside of school. she had no other refuge than counting on raine to take her away from her will to nurture her father while 'weening herself' away from the nest at the same time. sooner or later, she would move out. she just had to get her life in order first. there really wasn't a back up plan if raine didn't end up being at the house. in fact, it was important that she was there. if not, the situation would turn incredibly inconvenient; the walk would have been for nothing, and.. the returning walk would be in the dark. the sky was slowly turning into rustier and rustier shades, and the evening was quickly approaching. she hadn't really figured it would be much of a problem when she was tying her shoes back on the front steps of her cozy little shack, since there would always be the alternative of just crashing at raine's, and borrowing some sweats to sleep in. she hadn't factored in any other outcomes.
of course, it always seemed like it took more time to actually get somewhere, then to return to your original starting point. the street lights weren't even on yet. she could just jog back home, leave a message for raine with whoever answered the door, and complain to her friend on the phone later. but, instead of continuing to be a pessimist, tierney focused on moving forward. raine would be there. she had to be there. where else could she possibly go, without factoring tierney into the equation? they were best friends after all, weren't they? with a small huff of a laugh under her breath at her own stupidity, she pushed off of the pavement with her palms, brushing them together to get the dirt off once she was securely on two feet. only a few more minutes now. a few more minutes, and she and her best friend would be wasting their entire evening by getting creative. that's normally what they did; came up with new ways to entertain themselves, since everything else had already been done.
as she advanced forward, tierney couldn't help but grin. if anyone had been watching her, they might have thought her to be insane. her hair was wind whipped, and shaggy, and she was dressed in a simple pair of jeans with a button up t-shirt. nothing flashy. definitely suspicious. the fact that she was smiling stupidly only made her ensemble look even worse, and there were no doubt people peaking out of their curtains at the freak coming down the street. especially with her quick pace. in fact, she had nearly broken into a run. suddenly she was grateful that she had traded out her original flip flop choice for a pair of converse at the last minute. as she was narrowed down to a distance of only a few yards between herself and the house, tierney couldn't help but to feel suddenly self conscious. raine never approved of her when she wasn't looking her best. if she recalled correctly, when she was found in such a wardrobe, she was labeled as having the "bum look." it was too late to focus on that now, though, seeing as she was probably already seen approaching.
a sudden burst of energy pushed tierney forward, causing her to careen into a mailbox, stumble over her own two feet, and scrape up the back side of her arm. "shoot." the words came out in an aggravated whisper, and she slowly limped towards the door, hoping nobody had seen her idiocy. hopefully, nobody knew she was there, and had missed her stunt. but if they had seen her? maybe there was still time to bolt back in the other direction before they could reach the door. she paused halfway to the door, waiting to see if it would fly open at any moment, revealing her "deer-in-the-headlights" self, but after waiting a good two minutes, she decided that she hadn't been caught. trying to shake off the pain in her foot, and therefore trying to get rid of her limp, tierney approached the large door, hand clenched in a fist, lingering just above it. "it's gonna be okay." she reassured herself, although she wasn't entirely sure why it wouldn't be okay.. she just liked the support she had from herself. turning her hand into a more "knocking" position, rather than her original "pounding" stance, she lowered her hand down on the door. three simple knocks, then she withdrew her hand, and linked her fingers behind her back patiently.

arizona pulled his heavy eyebrows together, scrubbing furiously at the tab he had laid out on the back of his guitar in his lap, half tempted to set fire to the project that had kept him away from the family dinner - though not entirely displeased with having an excuse to stay home from what would turn out to be another adventure into his mother's extreme veganism that after all these years he couldn't seriously hop on to that bandwagon. it was probably another sign he needed to move his ass out of the family home, so he could eat as he pleased as well as not have to think of this excuse and that to get some time to himself. he loved his family, they kept him sane, they were all really close, maybe with the exception of him and aspen whose ignorance rubbed him the wrong way but everyone needed their space. something that the scribbled tab in front of him only further proved. it was times like these when no one was around that he could only really find his focus to work on his music. something that also kept him really, really sane. if the house was only occupied by him and raine, normally a rare occasion it was a little different. they may have been the closest but they also understood distance. they both needed their releases, music was his and raine respected that. granted that mutual respect between them had found a little stress slipped in there, thanks to a friend raine really wished they didn't share. a picture of the brunette flashed through his mind and he could feel the smile spread across his face - what a sappy fuck. he pulled a hand through his perpetually messy hair and shook his head a little, it was a serios bone of contention that hadn't lessened in the time that raine had spent away, mostly because arizona had more then taken advantage of the time to get o know tierney a little better without his sister's glare at his back. it was time he was pretty sure tierney and him both took a guilty pleasure in, he still wasn't entirely of his footing arund her, but those were nerves that were never going to fade, but it was more then that. he'd never been an excellent flirt, he seemed to be a little better with tierney the more time they spent but he still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about him, a few blushes her and there encouraged him, the smiles that said more then they she wanted helped a little more but he was naturally insecure. something he could never explain and always hated but still lead him to doubt himself constantly.
a disposition that doubled with tierney, because she was so hard to read. he was used to girls thinking he was a loser but he was always used to girls thinking he was drop dead sexy, he was used to girls dropping to his feet and girls throwing drinks in his face normally met by a chorale of laughter led by his best friend ezekiel. what he wasn't used to? a girl as veiled as himself. tierney threw him off, she said so much in her wide eyes and still so little, it was frustrating and exciting all at the same time. he felt his man card slipping from his fingers with thoughts like that though. he should've manned up by now and just been honest with her, told he flat out he was into her, not vague comments of what he thought about raine not liking them hanging out or even the out and out defiance after one day raine had interrupted a joke they'd been sharing when she'd left the room to get a soda, he saw a little anger in her honey eyes mostly directed at him and she wasted no time in letting the words, "i do not want you guys dating." tumble from her mouth. the blush caught tierney's cheeks and he just laughed it off and he met her with nothing more then a, "you can be so silly sister. i'm a grown man, i can do what i want." he took that time to let his hand slide easily over tierney's leg as he stood and left the room, placing a kiss on top of his sister's head. he wasn't sure what had happened after he'd left the room and their movie halfway but he'd gotten a cold shoulder from raine for the next couple days. that clearly conveyed he didn't need her permission and that he liked tierney right? that showed he was more then open to the idea of dating her? or did it just make him look like a condescending jerk-off? all those doubts had cropped up in the midst of it. he couldn't bring himself to look at tierney without them raising again or letting a subtle strawberry tint take his cheeks in the next couple weeks.
with a groan arizona pushed a sigh through his lips - he didn't need his family to distract him. he did a damn good job of that on his own with his own mind. he couldn't seem to help the consistency with which tier popped into his head though. he certainly wasn't complaining about the fact at all either. whether raine liked it or not he really, really liked tierney. he didn't expect to gain any sort of approval from raine on the matter either. the only thing that he saw that really stood in the way of him and tierney was his own stupid behaviour. mostly his nerves, but he was pretty sure she wasn't going to exactly approve of him selling drugs either. it had never been a quite fact that him and raine liked to smoke pot, it was also an unspoken thing that he was the guy to go to, but they way rained talked she acted like she had that over him, like if he tried to take things farther then the awkward friendship he shared with tier that she'd drop the pot bomb on tier, well, he was calling her bluff. he knew rained didn't want them together but he knew she also wasn't that mean, she wouldn't sabotage them, she could hurt either of them.
...and all of that had nothing to do with his project at hand. "focus boy," he told himself, pulling another hand roughly through his mussed hair and turning the guitar over in his lap, setting the tab out on the bed again and beginning to play, but only barely singing underhis breath trying to find the rhythm and flow in the words. he felt the outside world melt around him the clock ticking above his bed, the electronic hum from his computer, the distant noise of a forgotten cell phone in his little brothers room. his world was his fingers and the strings and wood growing from them, the music flowing easily, until he hit the spot he hated, a spot further marred by a knock on his door. "fucking jehovah's witnesses." he muttered shoving the already crumpled tab and away from him, completely oblivious to the almost absent sun, setting his guitar on the bed with a little more finesse. half jogging to the door, he pulled it open with an almost irritated yank, it would figure that they would come back now when he was busy with something, until the sight of tier drew him up short, "oh," he said sounding incredibly stupid, he shook his head, idiot "i mean, tierney, hey!" he said trying to erase his surprise and bring up that smile that never took too long to show up around her, "i didn't know you were coming..." though the smile that had made it's appearance full force obviously showed he wasn't disappointed by the fact, "you want to come in?" he asked, before he gave it a moment, "everyone is gone though, family dinner."

the brunette shuffled where she stood for a moment or two. it probably resembled something along the lines of walking in place; aka, utterly pathetic. at least it seemed to be a bit less pitiful than pacing. " bad idea, bad idea.." she mocked herself under her breath, leaning her back against the side of the door way, yet still shuffling her feet. "this was a very bad idea.." it sounded less like a mumble, and more like a very huffy whisper. again, anyone nearby, either listening or viewing the girl, might have assumed she was insane. not only was she poorly dressed, she now had the addition of jittery, and talking to herself. quite a sight, really. she stopped fumbling for a moment to stare at her naturally twiddling thumbs, but soon found herself shifting her feet once again. nervous. definitely nervous.
it was odd that tierney was getting worked up about this visit in particular. this residence was normally a place of her refuge, where she spent numerous afternoons, and plenty of days out of the week slothing around. she normally found herself to be quite relaxed in the presence of the house; but, now that she thought about it, that only happened when she was with raine. the times with arizona? not that they weren't anything memorable, they were just a little less immature. some times, when raine joined them, the two were awkward. not completely off of speaking terms, but a little less verbal. they acknowledged each other, definitely, but they didn't exchange many words unless raine was out of the picture. these were the only times where she got worked up; where she was unsure, and vulnerable. of course, she tried not to appear that way, and usually it worked, but she did slip up on a few occasions.
she found her mind, and her gaze, wandering back to the darkening sky. she couldn't exactly find out whether or not it was the setting sun that was causing the dimming of the sky, or the clouds rolling in, but she hoped finding out wouldn't be necessary. she prayed that she would be indoors by the time the sky went completely black; either her own home, or this one. but as the minutes passed on, tierney was slowly pulling herself away from the door step. not full out movements, but she seemed to be leaning more and more in the direction back home. it just felt too.. strange to be waiting. it wasn't the fact that she was growing impatient that worried her. it was the suspense that was building inside; would raine be there? would she not? what would happen if she wasn't? would tierney be able to make it back home before night time hit? she could feel her blood pressure rising.
movement behind the door startled her. she could hear foot steps now. quick, heavy. almost angry. she turned her body to face the door, awaiting for it to open and reveal a face, telling her either good or bad news. but it wasn't the usual slow, creak open, let 'em in. the door flew open. angrily, quickly. a little too abrupt for tierney to find any sense of comfort. her eyes grew wide, and her face instantly flushed. she stumbled a few steps back, merely out of reflex. her eyes were glued to his face, and she could almost pin point the exact second when his expression changed; from irritated, to surprised. after that, he wasted no time to roll out the welcome wagon. arizona seemed energized, he was suddenly incredibly friendly, incredibly welcoming. she couldn't tell if it was because he was ashamed for the shock he had managed to give her, or just because he was generally happy to see her.
his incredibly wide smile didn't take much to provoke a smile of her own onto her lips. it was a tad more subtle, however. a bit more unsure. he had seemed rather agitated just moments before. she was probably still treading on thin us. "i, uh.." she stammered for a moment, trying to find her words. "are you sure?" she forced herself to meet his gaze, her own face wiping away to nothing but pure, innocent surprise. "you seemed kind of.. frustrated.. for a second there." she lingered, with one foot nearing towards the door frame. she didn't want to anger him further, but she did feel rather intrusive. after entering the establishment, and hearing the answer to the question she had been longing to ask, the last person to cross her mind was raine. instead of insisting on leaving right away, tierney settled with small talk. in fact, she had practically forgotten about her reasoning for the journey. it no longer seemed important; it had been wiped from her mind. "oh, and you didn't join them?" she sounded mildly curious at first, but then a devious grin took the place of her innocent smile. "i can't imagine why." the fact that her best friend has completely slipped her thoughts was probably a bad sign; but if raine had been in her situation, just inches away from a boy that never managed to leave any corner of her mind.. well, she hoped she would have understood.

as much as he'd missed raine in the few months she'd spent with their grandparents he had to admit that he'd also missed the all the time he'd gotten to spend with tierney without worrying about raine's commentary, or dealing with her looks of reproof. it had been a good way to get to know tierney, they had had plenty of moments of awkwardness given both of their habits to second guess themselves, but it always felt really easy to be around her. raine had given him the could shoulder for like a month after it had happened but it had been worth it. they both felt a little more comfortable showing their friendship around raine, simply because she waited until after tierney left to begin to take out her irritation on arizona. though as time went on he found it easier to ignore his sister's disdain. he could understand raine's worries, arizona never had done well in relationships, he got bored to easily with them, but... he'd never liked a girl like tierney before. there was something different about her, different about the way she made him feel. sure, it sounded like something every one said, and normally when he heard it from his heads he shook his head or just teased them about being whipped. now he sort of got it, while there was always more then a little nerves surrounding him when he was around her he also felt really at ease. it was something that faded a little the more they hung out with raine, because she had a tendency to be a total fucking buzzkill what with hr constant glares in arizona's directions and more then a few attempts to draw attention away from him, he didn't know what that accomplished, because he was almost sure tierney was just as hyperaware of him as he was of her. raine was just way too late in any attempts to prevent a friendship or further budding feeling between himself and tierney, especially when they'd had a few months of her being away and being able to hang out free and claer. sure, there had been the distractions of his other siblings, more then once he knew summer decided she wanted to occupy the same room as them because she was working for raine, but that was easily remedied by going for coffee or something, he knew moving themselves to his room would've achieved the same goal, but it was always a suggestion he'd never been quite comfortable in recommending, not sure of how she'd react. he thought she liked him too, no, he kind of knew. not because he thought he was some kind of god or anything, but because of the way raine fussed over them. if arizona was just the one with the crush she would've told him straight up he was shooting for an impossible goal. she'd done that on many occasions, but tierney had to at least show a little preference for raine to be so worried.
other then that, he had nothing solid. he'd never had the talent of reading people, he picked up on emotions really well, sort of fed off of them and it's why he tried to avoid being around people who were depressing because suddenly he'd find himself as equally sullen for n apparent reason but the atmosphere of the room around him, but when it came to reading people? no. he picked up on the obvious - pr most of the obvious - but the smaller intricacies, a lip twitch, dodging eyes - they were lost on him. it was fine with him, he'd never tried to be a human lie detector, nor did he try to puzzle out peoples motives very often and he wasn't a meddler if someone wanted him to know what was up they'd tell him. unless, of course, they were too similar to him and didn't quite know how to express or they were just too busy tying to figure out exactly what it was they were feeling. something he thought might be tierney's case, she was hard to read. maybe raine couldn't even figure it out, she just assumed tierney liked him when she really didn't know what she was feeling or just held no feelings further then friendship and she just simply didn't know how to explain it to raine after raine had already - no doubt - warned her about arizona. or maybe you're just over thinking things like a total fucking tool. now that was an option.
arizona wasn't exactly quick to temper, he was generally a laid back dude, but there were times like today that his mood was a little more volatile, mostly because of the absurd amount of thought running through his head while he was trying to work out a song. it never failed that when he was just getting back into something after struggling that long that something would come up and mess his rhythm all up again. the frustration that filtered through him, disappeared instantly as his eyes fell on tierney, though he could tell that there was enough there that she caught, she took a small tumble back and he felt like an ass instantly. except the other feelings that always surrounded her presence easily swirled around him, his smile spread easily over his lips, like a reflex that he couldn't have stopped if he'd wanted to. it was cheesy as fuck but he didn't really care. "yes, yes, of course." he said sounding a little to eager for her presence, good job. he looked a little nervous and embarrassed at her next words, his gaze falling from hers for a moment, "yeah, i uhm... uh.. i thought you were the jehovah's witness; they get really pushy you know? but i guess it's a little late for them to be coming, but..." he said shaking his head, "uhm, anyways, come on in," he said without really thinking taking her hand until she crossed the threshold and dropping it so he could close the door. he chuckled, "i'm supposed to be sick.." he admitted a sheepish and still mischievous smile pulling across his lips. "there is a new ethiopian vegan place downtown, so you know my mom is all over it." he further explained shifting his weight from one foot to the other as his eyes trailed down her face, "if raine, uh, if she..." he felt himself getting a little distracted by her eyes, so he dropped his gaze for a moment when he spoke, "did raine forget you were coming?" he asked, it really wouldn't have surprised him if she had, raine was always making plans and forgetting about them and making more plans. it was something he ever saw do to tireny, but there was a first time for everything and he wasn't exactly complaining, he loved the time he got to spend with tier without raine's piercing glare. "it's actually," he looked down at his watch, "kind of late, they should be back soon." he said, hoping he didn't sound too disappointed by the reappearance of his family.
