tierney clicked her tongue, shaking her head in sync. how could she be so picky about something as simple as books? but, then again, to her, books weren't so simple. they were like being thrown into another time, another place, watching so many things unfold before you, having the experience without needing to live it. she reread them over and over, countless times, until the pages were thin and the binding was worn down, the cover torn or scratched off. every book she owned had at least one problem with it, a holy cover, words that had been scrubbed off, or otherwise. not that she abused her books, she just had a habit of tracing the illustrations as she read, or flipping back to old passages every once in a while.
today's mission? a nice fiction book, preferably set in the medieval times. behind her gaze, tierney's mind spun with horse drawn carriages, and princess's facing the peril of a dragon, or the threat of arranged matrimony, dreaded among all the young royals, of course. but now she was looking for something new, something besides the common stories of handsome prince charmings, and demanding parents. maybe about the servant girl, or the dungeon guards, and what they had faced. or maybe the princess falling out of love for a change. that almost sounded horrible in her own ears. though love terrified her, tierney found it's powers to be marvelous, something, she was sure, that if she found, she would cherish. but, for now, she was focused on finding the novel that would soon be given a home on her bookshelf, or in the drawer of her bedside table.
she must have been pretty determined to find a book, it had taken tierney a great deal of will power to untangle herself from her warm sheets, a pry her fingers from the comforter, into the cold draft leaking into her bedroom. laying in bed all day seemed dreadful, well, for someone as energetic as the brunette was, without having something to preoccupy herself. book's were her best escape, her gateway to another world. they calmed her, brought a on a new sense of happiness, allowing her to shrink back snugly under her covers, and enjoy her evening. but she had run out of things to read, well, things that wouldn't bore her to read a second time, so she had ripped herself from comfort for the satisfaction of taming her boredom.
dressed in a thin blue sweater, and a pair of jeans, tierney had made her way out of the house. she had shed off her school attire, something she normally hid under layers and layers of jackets, and swapped it for something much more casual, something she wouldn't mind being seen by the public in. her best bet was to stick with the jeans, wrapped tightly around her calves, but swap her lace up boots for some converse, so no unnecessary attention would come the girls way. her locks were loose, as usual, and hung no different then a day at the academy. in truth, people's opinions didn't really phase her, but she'd prefer eyes kept off her then on more then anything. when noticed, not only would her cheeks burn a bright crimson, but her whole body stiffened, like she could feel the gazes on the back of her neck. every since lillie cassidy had died, tierney had never been the same. everyone was unfamiliar, unfriendly. it was better she kept her distance.
tierney had shied away from people, humanity, since she lost her mother. their views of her terrified the brunette, brought a sinking feeling to the pit of her stomach. she dreaded opinions, even eyes on her. it made her feel uncertain, uncomfortable. so far, she knew little to no people in the new state, even though she'd been there for a few good years, and the thought of being so lonely was the only comforting one she had, in a scary way. if there were people, she'd grown an attachment, and she'd be utterly devastated if she were to lose them. if there weren't, she was insecure, knowing that they'd find a problem with her before she could prove that she wasn't some freak. tierney had created a battle that she was unable to win, making her feel like she had no power of her own, like the world was against her. that made days inside, reading, all the more appealing to her. she was shy enough as it was.
the tips of her fingers ran across the binding as she stalked another aisle in the book store, toes pointed in, walking in her own unique way. she felt delicate enclosed between the shelves tower up above her, hidden from unfamiliar strangers that lurked just around the corners. it gave her butterflies for no apparent reason, like she was mysterious, like they wanted to know her. tierney's eyes widened, frightening herself with the thought, and causing her concentration to flicker. she tripped over herself, pressing her palm on a shelf for support, knocking the row of perfectly lined books clean off. "crap!" she hissed, louder then intended, meant to be no more then a mumble, a whisper to herself. it almost echoed through the store. her body went cold, down to her toes, all except for the temperature of her face, bright red, up to her hairline with the heat. her heart sped up. all eyes turned to her, burning into her neck, her back. her worst nightmare.
she felt ridiculous, embarrassed, idiotic. tierney sank to the floor, almost in tears. a harmless journey, a fix for her request, had gone so horribly wrong, that she'd ruined her washington reputation as an almost normal human being. she waned to hug her knees to her chest, panicking, and though she was upset, she was too polite not to do something about her mistake, and began scooping up the fallen books, scrambling to put them back on the shelf, "no harm, no foul." but inside, she wanted to cradle herself, to shut out the world around her, tempted to wrap her arms around her knees, and sink back into the shelf behind her. eyes wide instead of squeezed shut as she would have preferred, her brain seemed dead, her body numb, she couldn't force them closed, to look away in shame. it never crossed her mind that she could find the courage to stand up and walk away, but right now she felt like a fragile, beat up little girl. she couldn't tear her gaze away from the people staring at her, she wanted to just curl up and away, though she continued to pick up books by the armful, praying that no one she knew was there, witnessing this.

Arizona blanched the second he entered the large, sleek kitchen. His father wasn't attempting to cook again but the sight that might him was nearly as horrible, Summer stood with the open cupboard the cut crystal sugar container tilted over her mouth. A thick white stream fell into her mouth forming a glittering pyramid on her tongue, shaking his head he snatched the half drained container from her hand, "You sick, twisted child. What are you doing?" He asked rhetorically, stashing the sugar back in the cupboard, "Mom would have a heart attack if she saw you doing that..." Not that he agreed with his mothers attempts to sway them to the dark side of vegan dieting, but one he'd cath heat for it if she caught Summer and two Summer was the least of their siblings that needed that much of a sugar boost. It was also disgusting, not even in the most desperate times of munchies ad he resorted to that, he shuddered a little. "Buzz kill." Summer said in a sing song voice as she stalked out of the kitchen and to her room, waiting a few moments he opened the cupboard took the sugar back out and put it on top of the fridge, shoving it back until he heard the clink
of the crystal making contact with the tile trim. With some stupid soap opera marathon his sister's loved on and Summer having consumed at least half of the container of sugar there was no way he wanted to be stuck around the house right now. Estrogen City was bad echoing, didn't need to add Summer hyped up on top of it. Grudgingly, he returned to his room and snatched up his coat. Shoving his arms through the holes roughly he went into the living room and motioned to Raine, the oldest of his sisters and younger then him by less then a year, "You'd be my favourite sister if you could hold down the fort for the day?" He asked with a smile that was pleading for him, Raine's answering smirk put him on guard but she nodded giving him a half hug, "I'm already your favourite sister." It was only true but he wouldn't admit it to her. Summer was too hyped up for him and Aspen was the baby of the family and three times more shallow Summer – a true feat. Aspen and Arizona were a study in contrasts, they were almost completely different – excepting their coppery hair and blues eyes that clashed with their siblings dark chestnut hair and hazel eyes. All the same Aspen was still his sister and he treated her no different from the rest of his siblings, who were all a mix of his and Aspen, bold and stand offish all in one. Summer and Aspen were the only one's who seemed like they must have been adopted, in fact were Arizona meaner he might have been telling that to them there whole lives. However that seemed to be Lennon's shtick; telling Dakota that he was found on the side of the road- only because he was the only one with freckles. After which Raine chimed in with something about genetics and Punnet Squares, proving that she was the nerdiest after Arizona. He'd be nowhere without his family but he had to admit it was great to get away from them every once and a while. Though his unwillingness to move out proved that it wasn't something he was sure he could do full time yet. For now a trip into town was good enough, lacking any new books to read it was about time to make an event out of shopping. He detested shopping, books and music were okay, but clothes made him want to hang himself. Raine apparently decided he couldn't be trusted alone clothes shopping and had taken to accompanying him, insisting they spend at least three hours in each store, dressing him up in whatever she could get her greedy little hands on. All of which he – of course – had to pay for. And heaven forbid he wear the wrong jeans with the wrong shirt, the fact that his stuff wasn't wrinkled was a triumph enough, he was definitely not stylish. If not for his sister's interventions he'd live in the same two pairs of jeans and 7 or 8 shirts. According to his sister this was a crime punishable by death, her "favour" of him was the only way he survived according to her. To make up for the fact he had to suffer through horrendous clothes shopping outings he normally tried to stick to online shopping for his books and music and anything else that Raine didn't feel the need to supervise the purchase of. Today, the weather was almost decent, cloudy but not yet raining, so it had to be taken advantage of. Still the wind whipped against him and he jogged the last half block to the book store and ducked in, basking in the warmth for a moment before he headed towards the aisles of books. Aside from the coffee shop, and of course the university, this was where he spent most of his time. He was the guy reading in the aisle, making the store clerks hate him and some of the nicer – and normally older – employees chuckle. If not for his music he'd definitely fall into the "book nerd" category. It was what made him seem a little antisocial, but books were easier to him. Books and music you didn't have to communicate with, you didn't have to worry about stuttering or embarrassing yourself. Something the male had managed to do quite often. He definitely learnt social graces from his father, who thought the less time spent talking the better. Both of them seemed to have an eternal case of foot in mouth disease, something that – In Arizona's case – only worsened around pretty girls. He didn't have quite the ego most of his other friends did, his ego and confidence blossomed during and after a show, but it was something he could never manage to carry throughout his everyday life. Since he hadn't become some kind of social leper he had to figure that maybe his silence made him seem mysterious and brooding – possible even a little sexy. Something that, of course, made him happy. Arizona turned his attention outward now that he reached the section of the store he'd been aiming for, he pulled a few out scanning the back covers and setting them back in their – wrong – place. There hadn't been much new out that he was really interested in, but he had read all of his books so many times he was sure he memorized them and it was either go through his collection again by series or finally give in to Summer's insisting he read one of her silly vampire books... So not happening. His lake of reading material was starting to get critical. Something had to be done. He skipped over what looked like a Star Trek book and was reaching for one with an interesting cover when a crash caused him to jump, it was close. A moment too late he realized it was only in the next aisle over, pointed gazes hit him but seeing his shelf intact most turned away but the others left of him stared down the next aisle. He smirked as he heard a familiar voice cut the small chatter of the store, Only Tierney... He thought wryly, she may not have been a total klutz but she had her moment where she was farm from the picture of grace. Looking around the corner he caught sight of her familiar hair, shaking his head he walked up behind her, "Aren't you glad you aren't at the Pottery Barn?" His smirk growing wider as he saw the strawberry stain across her cheeks when she turned to look at him, he collected the last of the books from the ground, ignoring the irritated whispers of the fellow customers. "I could start calling you Hurricane Tierney, if I was a bigger ass." He teased, leaning carefully against the shelf and smiling down at her, "So, what was on the agenda after destruction of property?" TAGGED: tierney fawn cassidy a.k.a jinxie . STATUS: finished . tierney wanted to scream out loud, her anger overcoming her fears. crap, crap, crap! she began furiously shoveling books into her open arms, and leaning to press them back into the humongous gap on the shelf. she felt...well, simply idiotic. her calm "book mood" had been shattered, and her body felt like an ice statue compared to the heat erupting through her face, and the usual pallor of her cheeks interrupted with a scarlet shade. how could one little person be...so...embarrassed, over something so little? sure, it caused her an inconvenience, but she'd probably never see the people in the book store ever again, so it wasn't like there was anyone to remind her of the accident, and she could just disregard it in the end. she exhaled, comforted by that thought.
a shuffle of feet made her muscles tense, but it was probably just a store clerk on the way to nag at her, which she would take and return with silence. she deserved to be scolded, yes, but she didn't have to get in a fight with an employee over something stupid. when the voice traveled out, though, tierney's heart seemed to flicker, and stop completely. her eyes widened with shock, and she flipped to see his face, arizona's, and he was staring back at her, a smirk on his face. she was frozen for a moment, not quite sure what to do, but when his sentence finally became clear to her, tierney's eyes narrowed into slits, and she glared at him, pressing a few more of the fallen books into their slots. she tried to keep a straight face, but a grin flickered, playing on her lips, but disappeared within seconds. her blush hadn't faltered, still cherry red, blood burning under her skin. if anything, it had gotten worse with the sight of him.
before she could refuse, he was knelt down beside her, helping her return the fallen books. there weren't many left, now, the gap had almost closed. it took her a moment to realize that her horrifying "maybe" had came true. she had ran into someone she knew. her heart skipped a beat. great. the only lucky part here had to be the fact that arizona wasn't the type of guy to go and tell everyone everything. at least, she hoped not...no. he seemed too..sweet for that. too conservative, maybe? he had always been quiet when you viewed him from a distance, well, when tierney had at least. but she never could understand why, suddenly, he had managed to make her heart pound faster, beating against her ribs. it had never occurred when his sister had introduced them, and then, suddenly, he made her nervous. even now, under a stupid circumstance, she felt uncomfortable, stupid. like she'd manage to mess this up even more...not like it mattered.
a lump had come and gone in tierney's throat by the time he spoke again, which actually had been in a matter of seconds. maybe she was just convincing herself that she had no will to speak, even though she felt like spilling the story of her life out to him, for no apparent reason. this time, she managed to keep a straight face, since she had found his comment a little more insulting then when he last spoke. "believe it or not, i wouldn't hold it above you." she retorted, regretting it instantly, and biting her lip. she tried to cover the side of her face with a curtain of hair, but was certain that she had failed. instead of making her intentions obvious by brushing her locks with her hand, she kept her eyes down and away from his, beginning to stack the fallen novels on the floor now.
tierney was certain her face looked sour, and her tone had been a little harsher then she had intended. but she wasn't in a very good mood, now. she felt..broken, fragile. and, above all things, an accident magnet. she didn't do something stupid all of the time, and for that she was grateful, but instead, her idiocy came in heaping portions. she'd catch her balance while walking with a tray of food, but end up spewing bags of groceries out into a busy parking lot, by tripping over a carefully placed speed bump. she avoided little disasters, but big ones followed her, harbored on her shoulders, waiting to attack her. she'd have to be extremely careful now that arizona was going to be around. at least, she thought he would..hoped he would. tierney wouldn't continue to shop at the store now that she made a fool of herself, at least for the day, and she certainly didn't feel like returning home already. maybe he would be able to entertain her.
she wasn't about to say anything while they were still cleaning up the mess she had managed to make, though, tierney was subtle about things. she'd try to find a way to slip it into the conversation, well, if he stopped and talked to her, which she figured he would. but she couldn't understand why she cared so much, why she worried about what he thought of her. why it even mattered. she shrugged it off, her mind reeling with what to say, but arizona's next question caught her off guard, making her think for a moment. her sly smile was replaced with a thoughtful one, and she paused from her busied hands, and tapped her chin with her finger, something she'd seen people do hundreds of times when they were deep in thought, or forgot something. "well, i had plans of 'slipping' in one of those fancy craft stores, you know the ones, and knocking over every piece of stained glass they had, but," she paused, shrugging, trying to keep the grin off of her face, her thoughtful expression turning to a clearly sarcastic one. " i'll probably just go ahead and skip to burning down a building or two. i didn't expect to waste so much of my time here..." a clear smile was on tierney's face now. she was unable to restrain herself any longer. "..why?" she couldn't comprehend why, at that exact moment, her pulse had doubled in speed.
why did she feel so funny right now? it was only arizona. she'd seen him thousands of times before, but only recently had she began to feel tense whenever she saw him. hadn't things been normal between them? excellent, even? why did she feel so uncertain? like he was going to punch her, or something. did she really care if he told anyone? they already found tierney to be the odd new girl...of six years. then why was her stomach so uneasy? she attempted to shrug it off, unsure if that was even possible. she tried to clear her mind, focusing again on the words exchanged, the only thing she cared to hear the answer to had to be why he had asked. he'd come up with stinging comment no doubt, but she'd probably disregard it, as she usually did. it was almost like the question was sentimental, but why, all of the sudden, did tierney care? her throat tightened, and she stiffened, waiting for his reply, probably more anxious then necessary to hear it.

His sisters friends nine times out of ten annoyed the fuck out of him, Raine acquired a few decent ones. Tierney was one of those, sure, he wasn't spending all his time with her, but it wasn't weird if she showed up and Raine wasn't home and he certainly didn't go out of his way to avoid her when he saw her out. Most of the time, for some – as of yet – unexplainable reason, he tended to go out of his way to talk to her. Obviously they weren't best friends nor were they as close as her and Raine but it didn't stop him from his teasing, he may not have been a total douche bag like some of his friends, more specifically Ezekiel who would have made this experience all the more horrible for her, but judging by the glare he received – which had all the force of a three year old on tricycle – he might as well have tried to tap into his inner Ezekiel. Her glare didn't perturb him, it only made his faint smirk turn into an all out grin. It was almost adorable that she thought it was frightening, but perhaps if he was smarter he might have acted even a little frightened or humbled by it. Though she hadn't exhibited to him yet that she was prone to the violence his sisters were when they felt they weren't being taken seriously. Maybe he shouldn't be testing that boundary...
As a general rule; he was not an asshole. In fact it was one of the qualities he really prided himself in, granted he was given to moments of pure asshole-ness (after all he was a man) but not enough to warrant the response he got. He shrugged it off though, not really phased by the sharper tone of her words, which had more force then her earlier glare, but not by much, "Hey now," He said now feigning offence at her words, "That was very, very uncool of you." His grin came back easily though, "And here I am being a gentlemen and helping you pick up the books too." Tables turned he was pretty sure he wouldn't have felt much in the mood for joking either, no person really did good when they were stuck in embarrassing situations, the last thing on their mind was trying to make light of the situation. Sometimes he lacked foresight and sensitivity, witty lines in his head didn't always translate to the same wittiness when they left his mouth. And there was a certain amount of sensitivity he always felt like he should treat her with, she always seemed especially breakable to him. It was obvious even when he didn't know about her mother, something he'd inadvertently learned from Raine, he didn't have the balls to ask Tierney herself about it.
He was allergic to tense situations, and tears, put him in a situations where no doubt both would be present and he just didn't do well. It was a recipe for disaster, he had enough trouble with his words to begin with, getting him mixed up in that would make it fifty times worse. Not to mention he'd probably be trying to make a joke, his normal coping method for when things got uncomfortable and it normally was never a joke in good taste, something he was pretty sure he'd never be cured of. Anytime one of his sister's were upset he did his best to shuffle them off to his mother or one of his other sisters. Going after the person that made them upset; that he could do. Tears and feelings, it was best he stayed away from that. Fifty miles away. He was sure he'd eventually get better but it wasn't going to be something he practiced with Tierney, it wasn't like she was suffering from a break-up or being called out behind her back by a best friend. Death was significantly more serious and he could see the way it still clung to her. A smile broke his face when hers lost it's hardness, obviously he hadn't mortally offended, though really it would have surprised his if he could manage such idiocy in less then two minutes of striking up a conversation with anyone. "Oh well, that's a very good idea, too" He began with a chuckle, "However I'm sure you'd end up hurting yourself, glass is very sharp. " He shook his head with another laugh, "Hmm, I like to start my day with arson, actually. " He said a thoughtful look coming across his face as he paused, "Much more of an adrenaline rush, you know. Also, if you get caught in the middle of your spree of terror, you already have a good start and you can brag to all your homies in the yard..." He said, his words dissolving into a chuckle, he was way to white to finish that sentence.
The question drew him back a little, a split second later he composed himself with a shrug. It was fair, he was asking himself the same question now, he normally did go out of his way to talk to her, he couldn't yet comprehend why but he did. He liked her, in the friendly sense. They fit well together really, he didn't fill the need to fill up the lapses in silence that sometimes fell between people when they were hanging out. Though, he noted, there really weren't that many to speak of when he was hanging out with her. He brought his eyes back down to her face, and something was expectant about it, like there was something deeper in the word then he was figuring out. Which made abrupt nervousness trickle into him and made him more critical of his words. He offered her a wry grin, though, "Well, every criminal mastermind needs an accomplice, right?" He asked rhetorically, "So, I offer your my amazing services... My accomplice services that is..." He shook his head at the last part, Obviously, you idiot. Still, he kept his grin in place trying to betray that he felt like a totally idiot, what other services could he really be offering her. Good job, Arizona, good freaking job. "Uh, so yeah, we could hang out, unless you actually have real plans... with someone?" Swift, really swift.

almost every time tierney was around arizona, she felt like laughing, or, at the least, cracked a smile. sometimes he was a jerk, which wasn't surprising, and when that happened, she'd ignore his comment, passing it off with a look, or pretended not to hear him. he always lifted the mood, made it livelier, fuller. he came with a heavy dose of sarcasm, and she was one of the few people who understood it, enjoyed it, even. he wasn't his sister, of course, but she found herself wondering if he'd be around before she'd pay a visit, or dial the phone. she'd shrug it off after a minute or two of pondering, but when she'd arrive she would peer around the house, or listen on the phone for the ringing of his voice somewhere in the background. then she'd declare herself as utterly pathetic, and snap out of her trance. sometimes it took more than one attempt.
currently, she found herself staring at him foolishly with a grin cemented on her face. how could anyone manage to have that affect on her while barely trying? it was like it came naturally to him. either that, or he practiced in the mirror at home, with nobody watching him. tierney went with the first option, the thought of him mouthing sarcastic jokes to his reflection was a little too creepy for even this strange girl to handle. she brushed her fingers along the papery edges of the book in her hand, realizing she had been doing so for quite a while now, and probably looked completely idiotic. she cleared her throat, averted her gaze back down to the ground, and slid the novel back onto it's shelf. his 'homies' comment was still rolling around in her head, so her smile never left her lips, even when she looked away. he could be such a dork sometimes.
maybe that's what made arizona seem...special to her. he wasn't like anybody else she'd ever met. not in a weird, uncomfortable way, in a relaxing way, a good way. he could make her smile without having the will to control it, or leave her to her thoughts when she needed the silence. it was like he knew her without knowing her, understood her without an explanation. she admired that about him, how he seemed to know when to keep his mouth shut, or the right time to flash her a grin. she wondered if that was effortless, or if he paid too much attention, or if she really even cared. no one could fake emotion like that, so why would she suspect him of lying for no reason? it wasn't like he was being a pig or anything, he was just paying attention. but why did this bother her? why was there a sickening twist in her stomach whenever he spoke, or even moved? tierney cleared her throat, refocusing.
she had barely caught what he said, he seemed like he was speeding through his words, but tierney shook her head and cracked another grin in his direction when he answered her question. "i suppose they do, don't they?" her words were a mumble, she could barely hear them, so she doubted he did. but that was okay. he continued to talk, anyway. "i, uh, see.." my accomplice services? could there be anything else he meant? the faded chalky color of her cheeks was now burning apple red, once again, but she tried to pass it off with a nervous laugh. "your accomplice services are much appreciated, then." anything to keep him around. she dug her fingers into her palms at the thought. why did she feel so...attached? she swallowed, hoping he hadn't noticed.
tierney shifted uncomfortably, now nervous of what was in store for her next. he'd probably mention something about her shuffling, or point out the cherry color of her face, which would, without a doubt, make her feel sick to her stomach, and make her go numb. something about being embarrassed, or even noted for stupidity, by arizona was a little too overwhelming. like she worried too much about what he thought of her already, of what anybody thought, so finding her flaws only made it worse. but, instead of teasing her as she had predicted, he had carried on with his sentence. she was grateful for the grin on his face, even though it made her reel with the possible things he could have said instead. "oh, please. i'm apparently too dangerous to be around, you're the only brave soul so far," a smile of her own grew on her face, though she wondered if she should take her self insults personally. well, raine still liked her, and so did jayden, and isolde. she couldn't be that horrible, and the thought relaxed her. she just hoped that he understood that she had meant this as a joke, rather than otherwise. it was true enough to be taken either way.
her heart was beating wildly in her chest. this wasn't unusual, she discovered, but it seemed that it only happened around the breckenridge household, or at least the family. with someone like jayden gates, she was completely at ease, comforted. he was like oliver, the older brother who didn't have time to watch out for her much anymore, even though jay was much younger. a theory might have been the fact that arizona was the opposite gender, something that terrified her completely, but, then again, so was jayden. maybe it was the discomfort she felt from not knowing him as well as she did her other friends, after all, they weren't too close. she'd have to find a way to fix that. despite all of her thoughts, tierney managed to keep the smile solid on her face, it never quivered, and she prayed she didn't look ill at ease.

Half the time when they hung out without his sister, it wasn't for very long, but he was surprised she even still wanted to talk to him, he was so awkward when it came to girls... No. When it came to girls he liked. Did he like her? Well, of course he liked her, but did he like her? Great, you've digressed to elementary school definitions of like. He hoped his disappointment in himself didn't show to his face but still he dropped his gaze from hers for a moment, quite often he was pretty sure she could tell what he was thinking. That's why they were a good pair, not that they really were even pair but they meshed together right. They didn't push each other, things were comfortable. That's what friends are for, dumbass. He brought his gaze back to her, catching her own, staring a little too long and perhaps too intense, and gave a nervous chuckle when she broke away from it. Nothing like making things awkward. That stupid voice was a little to active today, maybe he was just going crazy. "What? I don't get a laugh, that was funny..." he joked, shaking his head, fishing for compliments wasn't hi thing but something had to break the silence, "I mean, it was lame, but that's my specialty." Ah, self-deprecating humour, his oldest and truest friend, shaking his head a little he ran a hand through his messy copper hair.
The fact that she didn't dismiss him, made him a little too happy, just from the casual friends stance, at least. A normal friend wouldn't have cracked a grin as wide as his, he would have just shrugged "Cool, cool." That's why he wasn't smooth around girls, that's how he always managed to embarrass himself. Luckily it seemed he didn't mess it up so horrible around her, he was far from cured and Ezekiel would no doubt have still teased him mercilessly and told him he said all the wrong things, but he was pretty sure he would have provided the boy with less material for the endless ribbing. He could only venture it wasn't because he was suddenly better with his words when presented with an almost awkward conversation; he'd have to admit it had something to with Tierney. She was different. Not in the bad, oh look, she's talking to herself way, but in a comforting way. He didn't feel like such a dumbass when he talked to her, didn't worry as much about what he said. Which he was pretty sure was dangerous waters, sure familiarity was okay, but not on this level. He wasn't allowed to feel that way about her or even think like that, that was Raine's best friend and she was strictly off limits.
An emotion that could only be called rebellious rose up in him and he figured, hey if Raine didn't know she couldn't disapprove. They had ran into each other, they were just talking, shooting the shit, whatever. It was nothing, Raine didn't have anything to bitch about. Though another part of him know, Raine never really needed a reason, she'd just bitch because she felt she was justified. Satisfied with this line of reason, an unrestrained smile spread over his face at her words, he gave a light chuckle with it, he wasn't going to lie that it gave him another sense of satisfaction that she wasn't meeting anyone else. Even though that was something he should avoid. So what if she was? She was his friend, period. Friends don't get jealous or feel smug that she would prefer his company over anyone elses' too. Those things were high on the list of what he shouldn't been considering. "The only danger of being around you is falling in love, Tier." He said a charming smile on his face. Yeah that was a comment that could get him in hot water with Raine, but it was only true Tierney was a beautiful girl. While a little shy she was amazingly captivating, anyone that could get past the first bit of reluctance would be in good position to see those parts of her. "Besides," He began, an impish smile fluttering across her features, "A little danger is fun, granted both of us will probably to do something to foil our evil plans before they are hatched, so we really don't have to worry about too much danger." He said with a chuckle. He may not have been as bad as Ezekiel at spoiling plans but he certainly wasn't legions better. Arizona just wasn't made to be sneaky, he shouldn't be let anywhere near the scheming of any sort of prank. The best he could do was be look out and even he had failed at that a time or two.
Grinning, he tilted his head in mock thought, "I really think we should try our hand at trying to rob a bank, because I saw on the news the other night that there was this old man on a spree of bank robberies and he's getting away with it." He was joking about them actually trying to rob a bank but there was a sense of wonder in his tone as he told her the story, "I mean, really, this man is two days older then dirt, how does he manage it?" He said with a chuckle, shaking his head a little. "Anyways, if becoming Bonnie & Clyde for the day isn't really your style I'd kill for a Danish and some Coffee." He gave a wry grin as he looked at the haphazard shelf they had put the books back on, "Unless you wanted to knock over the whole case before we left..." Yeah, he was being a smartass, he braced himself to be hit because he knew that Raine would have in Tierney's shoes. "I'm kidding... Sort of." He said an apology in his tone, but the mysterious glint still in his eye. Giving her a repentant smile he held out his arm, "Shall we?"

tierney wasn't quite sure what she was getting herself into, but it wasn't like it was extremely dangerous. this was arizona, anyway, not some complete stranger. raine didn't even believe that her best friend and her brother had a connection, something she found out through recent conversations with the girl, and this almost felt like she was betraying her. but it wasn't like they were doing anything bad. in fact, they were hardly doing anything at all, from the conversation they were having. it would probably be lunch or something, nothing for raine to get her panties in a wad over. so why was she suddenly nervous? it had to be something to do with raine, she'd been around arizona too long to feel even the least bit uncomfortable. her stomach felt like it was tied in a knot, and she could feel her blood burning in her cheeks. it wasn't like raine could disapprove of an outing with her own brother? what was she going to do about it, anyway? a lot of yelling and thrashing, maybe, but nothing drastic. tierney hoped, anyway.
though she had averted her eyes, she could tell that he was making some odd face. he wouldn't just easily drop a subject. tierney moved her eyes until they were on his face again, her face blank as he spoke. why hadn't she laughed? she didn't want to look like an idiot, of course, or like she was making fun of him if he had meant that seriously. she smiled, though not hugely, at his complaint, and she shook her own head as well. "i wasn't sure if you were being serious or not," a pathetic excuse, really, enough to make her smile grow. "..though, i guess it's pretty obvious that you were joking." she felt a little sheepish, and her cheeks began to blend into a rosy pink shade. she shifted a bit, suddenly feeling uncomfortable, self conscious. "if i laugh now, does it count?" it sounded pathetic in her own ears. tierney hoped her voice hadn't cracked, inside she was panicked, nervous.
now tierney wondered if she should mention this run in to raine. it wasn't like she needed to know, but it still felt like betrayal. best friends were supposed to tell the other everything, right? especially since arizona was her brother. that complicated things. she already had her suspicions of something between the two to begin with, did raine really need to know about the encounter? it seemed worse now that she had been invited for something more then picking up a series of books that had been knocked off the shelf, but it was more like they were both free for the afternoon, and needed to do something to occupy their time. not like a date or anything, and there wouldn't be anything tragic happening, anyway. so why would raine have to be concerned? now the question was; should tierney tell her or not?
she couldn't help but to smile, only softly, when she saw the grin stretch across his face. good. he was content. that's all that really mattered. now she was bracing her self for his smart alec comment, knowing she was either going to be surprised, meaning a strange reply, or sent into a fit of giggles. a smirk was on her face, but as soon as he replied, tierney's eyes grew wide, and her face slightly fell. not in disappointment, but in utter shock. she didn't even have the right state of mind to hope she didn't look idiotic. falling in love? with tierney? was he in his right mind? she wasn't exactly sure how to react. maybe he hadn't meant it to surprise her, but what if he had? what if he was talking about himself? though, clearly, with the calm way he had said it, he was making a generalization. though the huge smile on his face told her otherwise. "i, er.." how was she to respond to that? luckily she didn't have to, since he continued to speak.
she actually managed a muffled snicker, since tierney had once again flicked her gaze to the floor. did she dare my eye contact with him? after that? but, even if he wasn't expecting an answer, it was rude not to at least make eye contact with him. obviously he wasn't as nervous as she was herself, since his mood stayed light. she tried to shrug off the recent comments, and focus on what he was saying now. tierney had always been on the quiet side, but never because it was forced on to her. how could this boy have such an affect on her? not only did he leave her speechless, but he made her smile, lifted her mood whenever she was around him. never had she felt uncomfortable in his presence before, so why was the concept hard to grasp now? he looked thoughtful, though, as if he was trying to comfort her, to ease the tension she now felt tightening her muscles. he was still joking, at least.
a smile stretched across tierney's face when he began explaining the story of the elderly bank robber. she even managed a slight laugh at the story, with the way he described it. two days older then dirt. that was enough to get a giggle or two out of the girl, but she covered her mouth with her hand so he could continue uninterrupted. her smile was still in place as he continued, changing from the plan of a chain of bank robberies, to just going out for coffee. she opened her mouth to speak, to agree, rather, but arizona continued. his sarcasm was what made her so attached to him, why she loved to be around him. she shook her head at the question, her eyes instinctively flicking towards the shelf and back to his face. she wasn't ready to go there again. tierney stepped forward, and laced her fingers around his arm. playfully, she elbowed him lightly in the ribs. her sheepish smile grew. "we can knock over the whole thing some other time."
