meet me here beneath the burning skies, ------------------------------------------------------------- Melody had just gotten out of her first class and she didn't need to be to her next for about an hour. She walked out of the front doors of the school and out onto the lawn area. She was glad that she brought a jacket due to it being more of a cold day, so when she sat down on the driest part of the grass, she set her backpack down and slid her jacket around her petite frame, leaving it unzipped. She then grabbed her backpack and sat it on her lap, afraid that the semi-wet lawn would dirty her bag and then get her school work wet. Opening up the front zipper, she took out her polka dotted sidekick and read some of the texts that she had from friends back home. They all went along the lines of, 'Mel Mel, we miss you. COME BACK HOME!' She smiled and sent a text to all of them saying that she missed them too and that she couldn't come home. Then she put her phone back into her backpack and zipped it up.
She could feel the water seeping through her pants now and that made her immediately get up and walk over to a bench. She sat down on it and crossed her legs, gently moving her ankle in circles. She sat there for a few minutes watching the students walk back and forth. She sighed, she really hated being the new girl, it was, sorta depressing. She didn't have anyone to talk to, and she didn't know anyone. Unlike back when she lived in Montana, and she knew everyone. After she sat there for a little and there was nothing to do, she brought out her over used copy of 'Romeo and Juliette' and began reading it for the like millionth time. She sighed, really getting into the book now. She'd read this book so many times that the binding was falling apart, and she had to tape it back because of the ripped pages.
Melody was now in her own little world. The real world around her could be falling apart and she would never know it. She picked her legs up, and sat 'criss-cross apple sauce'. She flipped the page, shivering at the cold gust of wind that flew past her. She looked up from her book and up at the sky, smiling when she saw some blue in the horizon. She was a little happier now that she knew the rain would seize. She loved the rain, this just wasn't the time for it. She was new and it was her first day. Usually that would mean that something bad was going to happen. Though nothing had yet, normally something would. With Melody being the optimistic person that she was, she just kept thinking that the day was going to get better. And that's what she had set her mind to. She then looked back down at her book and started reading some more.

don't look up, just let them think there's no place else you'd rather be
There were only two good things about being a senior; you got out 2 weeks before the ninth, tenth and eleventh graders, and two; those last weeks were filled with minimum days. Gloriously lazy minimum days that you lusted for seeing last years seniors waste away with frantic last minute studying or college planning. Okay, most kids were doing that same thing now too, but Liz wasn’t too worried about all those things, college was strictly optional at this point, until her father demanded she go she wasn’t making any plans for the fall but with the local travel agency and her credit company so they didn’t kill her credit card like they had when she was in Cabo for Spring Break. So, that left her afternoon - and most of her morning since she hadn’t bothered with her second and third hour Italian class- gloriously open to her. So why she chose to stick around the campus was anyone's guess, but she did. Shouldn’t she have been doing something seedy or even remotely interesting? Whatever she should have been doing, it wasn’t what she was doing, for whatever reason she wanted to spend the day on campus. She would cite convenience and the little bit of Tequila she had helped herself to already making driving out of the question, but we all know the real reason. Because as much as she would like to deny it, she was actually going to miss the school, a teensy tiny bit but she was going to miss it. She had had come good times here, mostly good times that would have or did get her suspended or in some sort of trouble, but it was fun.
Liz tossed a glance over her shoulder to the window, the clouds were thick and grey but they weren’t raining or even drizzling, she allowed a smile to stretch over her crimson lips. The teen would not miss the rain when she left here, even if her graduation from the academy didn’t mean her father was going to move to D.C. now that they were no obligations to stay in the rainy prison it still meant she was fleeing the place. There where-to’s were still being discussed but the when was as soon as she could manage it a.k.a; as soon as her father sent her some more money. Which could present a problem what with the way his recent time off and chance to be home went. The bruise was gone, she had cleaned up the broken glass and rehung the picture but it didn’t make her any less pissed off about what happened. She could handle his temper, she knew how to deal with that, it was very nearly like her own, but he had never gotten physical with her. And yeah all he did was shove her but it had been hard, the man was a marine and he was still working for the government so he kept himself fit- minus all the drinking. She wouldn’t have been hurt if the picture hadn’t been on that wall but that did little to console her, the fact he touched her at all was uncalled for. He had never done that before, sure, he felt guilty enough about it, but what if next time he didn’t stop at shoving? She groaned thinking about all this, “No, no, no. Day off, Liz, focus on that.” She peeled her eyes away from the window and turned back to her mostly packed room, even though her dad had the house in town when she was home she stayed in the dorms giving her more stuff then she would have thought she had because she lived in town. All that stuff meant too many boxes, she stared at the ugly cardboard towers near her closet, which one held her sketch book.
She pulled two or three boxes over to her bed, wishing too late she would have labelled them and pilfered through the things. Noah had told her to pack that last too, next time she would listen. After the first two boxes yielded no result she reached for a third, half way through the tattered hardcover sketchbook revealed itself. Shoving the cardboard box away from her with her foot, she headed towards the door, buttoning up the purple plaid shirt as she shut the door with her foot. She took the stairs quickly only stopping once or twice to chat with a few of her friends who had also opted out of attending the last few classes they had in Italian. With finals in it over, it seemed pointless to show up. After a quick detour to the cafeteria to grab a coffee and a pastry she headed out towards the big lawns, thankful that it seemed to be nearly devoid with people, save for a younger girl on the benches that stood out with her bright hair. Liz chose a spot under the a tree, tossed her book down and lowered her self to the grass and immediately shooting up, “Stupid rain.” She grumbled trying to see if there was any water making it look like she peed herself. Satisfied with her assessment she brushed some of the grass from her purple jeans before she picked up her sketchbook and walked towards the benches, that girl had the right idea. “Hey Red.” She said as she walked towards the benches smiling at the teen there, she let her gaze drop to the book in the girls hand, and she looked briefly apologetic, “Mind if I join you?” She asked motioning to the space on the bench next to her.

meet me here beneath the burning skies, ------------------------------------------------------------- Melody felt the rain hit the top of her head and she sighed. "I'm not liking this rain thing." She mumbled to herself. She liked rain, she just thought it was so weird that it was her first day and it was already raining. Bad omen or something. At least with the cover of the tree, she wasn't getting soaked. She looked back up from her book, to look for anyone that might be standing around, but she saw no one. Not a soul. It's like they had all disappeared. It was weird. She shook head head and sighed.
